math for 6th grader

Post by dianeh47 » Sun Mar 20, 2011 5:15 pm

Ladies,
I have been with HOD for three years. When we started, my then 4th grader was in mammoth math. Last year he did rod and staff. This year he was in life of fred and math essentials. he didn;t like any of those programs. I tested him for singapore math and he is somewhere at the 5th grade level. I feel that up until this year, he was ok, however this year was kind of a mess and I think he is behind. I kind of wish that I had started him in singapore math three years ago but I didn't and I don't know if it would be too hard for him. Do any of you have any suggestions? Thanks.
Blessings,
Diane

No suggestions, but I did want to say that if he is 6th grade and tested into Singapore 5, then he is actually not behind. Singapore runs a year or more ahead of most American programs. Math is one of those areas where you just kind of have to pick something good and stick with it. Too much switching doesn't often help, though I must say in your case you have got a pretty smart cookie, and it didn't hurt anything :)

The good news is just what the pp shared - if he tested in fifth grade Singapore math and is in sixth grade, he's doing well! Singapore math is considered a year advanced. I am excited about the math path HOD is taking us on, and I plan to keep moving on with it. HOD has dc do SIngapore Math through 6B, and then Discovering Mathematics after that. I actually researched this alongside Carrie and feel too that Discovering Mathematics (of the many different Singapore options) follows the Primary Singapore Math teaching style most closely. It will be a solid program to transition into after Singapore Primary Math 6B, as it will keep that solid math instruction going steady. If I were you, I would begin Singapore Math 5A with him and move through the sequence, but that decision is of course up to you. Whatever decision you make, it will probably be good to try to continue with that program in the years to come to keep it as consistent as possible from here on out. HTH! :D
