QUESTION about high school guides

My ds is 11 and finishing CTC. The only way he can finish the guides by the end of 12th grade is to skip one. My question is...will we be able to choose to skip the Geog guide and go on to the Wold History guide? Our umbrella school requires 1 year of either Geog OR World History. When we get to the high school level, is it going to be okay to skip to where we need to be...or will it really hurt us like it does in the lower guides?

I am just thinking I needed to remove my post on this one. I am afraid it would confuse people. It made sense to me but I am thinking it might add confusion for others. And I do not want to do that.

The last two elementary guides have extensions for high school. My daughter will do those two then geography in 11th and world history in 12th, still getting in all the requirements. The younger boys coming up will get to do the whole series. They will all get a great education. Nothing every works out perfectly in our eyes, just perfectly the way God planned for your or my family.

We can't quite follow this plan because my older son has to complete the following requirements for our umbrella school:

3 credits: World History OR Geography
Government and Finance
US History

I think the best option for us will have to be to skip one of the two guides in the middle...either the Geog guide or the World History one. Since my ds is on the older side of the age range for the guides and I really don't want to do extensions with him, the most logical choice is to skip the Geog guide, when we get there. However, I want to make absolutely certain that skipping is going to be okay and he will not miss out on anything he needs in order to be successful in the next guide. I surely don't want to miss the last guide in the series...as that will have elements that he needs to graduate (Personal Finance and Econ).

I know I have a long time to think, ponder, and consider and I am just so glad that the option to use HOD through high school is now a reality! YAY!

I feel the same as a you about the younger son - he will have an HOD education all the way from Little Hearts on. That really thrills me!

As I'm thinking through your situation, I'm thinking you must be looking at this plan if you just continued on as you are:

CTC - Grade 6
RTR - Grade 7
Rev2Rev - Grade 8
Modern - Grade 9
Geography - Grade 10
World - Grade 11
American to 1900/Government - Grade 12

If so, then your son would miss the final guide in the cycle but would have covered that material in grade 9. He would miss the Economics/ Personal Finance part, which would need to either be added to Grade 9 or added to a different year.

As far as what your umbrella school allows, it is likely that you could still folllow the path above, but you will have an additional credit in the History area beyond what they require. It is usually fine to list an additional credit, as it just falls under the elective category then, if it was earned. Typically, the listed requirements are minimums. So, if you followed the schedule above your son would end up with a credit for Geography, a credit for World, a credit for American, and .5 up to a full credit for Government, and .5 for Economics/Personal Finance. Typically, not more than 4 credits are given for work in the "History area".

You could have a different situation, but what I noted above is often the case.

Thank you for your input. Here is what I was thinking...but it would involve skipping the geog guide. The reason I would choose to skip that one instead of the last one would be that we do need personal finance/economics to graduate which we could get all in one with the last guide. So...


6th - CTC
7th - RTR
8th - Rev to Rev
9th - Modern
10th - World
11th - American to 1900/Government
12th - 1900 to present/Economics/Personal Finance

With this, we end up getting every single credit we need. I just want to make sure that the geog guide is not going to be a pivotal building block like the younger age guides will be. For instance, I wouldn't want to skip Bigger or Preparing before going to CTC because of the way the skills build...would it be a similar issue if I skipped Geog when we get there? Does that make sense?

This is only the case for my older son. My younger son hits PERFECTLY in the guides...just like he should.

At this point, since the geography guide is not yet written, I cannot say for sure what skipping it would do as far as needed skills go. From our perspective, it would usually be better to go in order if at all possible, just leaving off the last guide rather than omitting one along the way. However, there is a point as you get into high school where high school level work is on a more similar plane, just deeper the higher you go. So, with that in mind it may be possible to do what you are thinking. As we get the geography written, we will know better. At this point, I'd lean toward going in sequence if at all possible and just adding Personal Finance or Economics to an earlier guide. You'll know best though as you see the guides come out and their packages as we go.

Thank you - I too was thinking that high school level work was more on an even keel. I am getting ahead of myself anyway. I have no doubt that God will lead me to where we need to be as we get closer to high school. I am stressing for nothing.
