Has anyone ever let your child use their Extension books for their Dithor assingments? I feel like my 11 year old will be reading so much already on her own that I hate to add another book for Dithor. She will be reading on her own: A Child's Story of America, Exploring Planet Earth, and then the other books in the extension package. Thoughts on this?

Re: Dithor & Bigger Extensions
If that is what you think would work best for your daughter, then that is what you should do. You know her best!
The only thing is that DITHOR is divided into units by genre, and I don't know how many different genres there are within the extension package list. You may want to check on that.
Also, if you did use the extension books for DITHOR, you would obviously need to ignore the extensnion books reading schedule in the Appendix of Bigger.
Just some thoughts!
One more thought....if you think it would all be too much reading, just skip her using the extensions at all, and focus her extra reading on DITHOR. If extensions are too much for the child, you really don't need them to get the most out of Bigger!
Hope this helps!

Re: Dithor & Bigger Extensions
Hi,
The Bigger Extensions are 13 Historical Fiction, one History textbook, one Science textbook, and one Science biography. You would not be able to accomplish DITHOR assignments with these books, as DITHOR covers 9 different genres: Biography, Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery, Folk Tales, Adventure, Humor, Nonfiction, and Realistic Fiction. If your daughter has trouble with completing all the reading included in the Extensions and DITHOR, then the thing to do would be to drop the Extensions, and do Bigger Hearts as written wtih DITHOR. The benefits of DITHOR are not to be missed, and Bigger without Extensions is a full program if your child is not a very strong independent reader. The Extensions range in reading level from 4.0 to 6.7.

Re: Dithor & Bigger Extensions
These are excellent things to consider, and I would drop the extensions before dropping DITHOR. DITHOR is a student's reading instruction, and is integral to learning!blessedmomof4 wrote:... Re: Dithor & Bigger Extensions
I won't be dropping the Extensions, as she will be 11 when we begin. She reads at an 8th grade level, so I don't think she will struggle with the reading really. I just hate that she'll have so much to do. But maybe when we actually get in to it, it won't seem like as much reading as I think it is. I think if I let her choose her own Dithor choices, she'd like that and it wouldn't really seem like a lot of extra work, compared to her brother, who won't be reading the extensions.
Thanks, everyone, for the replies.

Re: Dithor & Bigger Extensions
I think you are right in that it won't actually take near as much time as you think it will. There was thread not too long ago talking about the time that the extensions take to do each day and I think the final consensus on that was around 15 minutes and no more than 25 minutes. Her reading for DITHR will probably only be about 15 minutes as well. So it's not near as much as it seems when looking at all the books involved.
