Preparing ?'s

Post by anointedhsmom » Mon Mar 07, 2011 4:27 pm

Day 1 of PHFHG and LHTH went well today. It was a long day but I know it will get shorter as we get into our groove. Any way I have some questions about a few things in Preparing.

1. Common Place book. Will the manual specifically tell us when to write certain things in the Common Place book? I skimmed through the manual looking for this and it appears that we only write in the Common Place book when we are told to. I just want to make sure before I start having him write stuff and it end up in the wrong place

2. Other notebooks and/or composition books - We are going to use 3 ring notebooks for History and Science. How many composition books will I need for everything else? I'm thinking 1 for dictation and I probably should get one for R&S English too shouldn't I? We will do most of it orally or on a white board but in the event I start having write the answers I would need another composition book. Are my thoughts on this correct?

Any other notebook/supply type stuff I am forgetting?

Thanks so much!
Blessings,

Sounds like you've got it figured out!

The guide will tell you when to write in the common place book, you'll need the binders for science and history notebooking...science will need two sections. One for notebooking, and one for lab sheets for the experiments. I think there is a lab sheet in the appendix you could copy and have ready. You'll need page protectors for these notebooks. Two composition notebooks I think is right...dictation and grammar. Maybe if you're doing poetry copywork you need another one...can't recall right now if that's part of the PHFHG plans.

My dd is doing preparing and she has a composition book that she decorated with scrapbook paper to make it special for her commonplace book. She has another one for grammar. Everything else we are putting in the binder with dividers.
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

Glad you had a great first day! :D

Here is what we have:

One 3 ring for Science with a separate section for experiments
One 3 ring for History (this is mostly for the written narrations, which he writes on looseleaf paper.)
One 3 ring for English and Poetry/Creative Writing (he does English on looseleaf paper.)
One Composition notebook for Dictation
One Composition notebook for Science questions (this is once a week...just found it easier to keep it separate from our other Sci notebook)
One Composition notebook for his Common Place book (the guide will tell you/the student when to use it...usually about once a week)

Everyone varies this a little bit...some people use a huge 3 ring for all of the three I listed...you need to do what will work best for you and your DS/DD!

HTH! :D
