Science for Beyond

Post by andi1234 » Fri Mar 04, 2011 1:27 pm

Can anyone tell me what topics are covered in Science in Beyond? I thought I saw a post earlier about this, but I cannot find it. The search feature keeps telling me that my words are "too common." Funny! :D I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thank you! I hope you all have a super weekend!

Beyond uses a CLP text that is set up with topics that pertain to the 7 days of creation. It really covers a wide variety of science topics. You do not read through the book in order though. The topics are correlated to the history topic, so you do an experiment/project, and then read a few pages in the science text. My kids love science, so my dh also reads to them out of the Apologia Elementary science books.

Thanks! Mine love science too. We ended up wanting to add stuff for science when we did LHFHG so I am trying to decide what to add for Beyond. I was hoping to add in some more books about the topics we are covering and some more experiment-type things to go along with what is scheduled. I really like the Apologia books too. Science is tough because there are quite a few great things out there! What to do, what to do,..... :D

Does it cover the same topics as the science books used for LHFHG? Those covered the 7 days of creation also.

Thank you for your help.

Yes the science book for Beyond is very similar to Little Hearts. It is just a bit longer. The experiments and text connections are different though.

I will try to help you! I'm not good at searching past threads either ~ there must be a secret to it!

My ds is working through Beyond this year. He has learned/will learn about the following from God's Wonderful Works as God's Creation is explored in depth...

sun, moon, stars, space
time
seasons
weather/climate
water (vapors, currents, etc)
animals (lots & lots!)
insects
soil/rocks
plants/trees
human body

You can easily add extra books/DVDs from the library, information from your own books & the internet which we do often just because my ds LOVES science! :D

Do you need one Science book per child in LHFHG and Beyond? Or, can you do the activities within the book in a notebook?

Thank you!

Hi Erin Kate! You just need one Science book per child in LHFHG & in Beyond! :D You read from the Science book, & the activities all come in the guide... you really don't even need a notebook at this point! :D
Have a great day!

We bought a science kit that is really neat. I have started "assigning" a project for my sons to do once a week together as an experiment completely on their own, working together using the kit. It is a starter kit, like for 5 and up, but it is all inclusive and has everything in it. Next year, I will buy another one and continue the same thing. They like science, but we don't always get it done in HOD. We do try to, but sometime we just don't  Next year, in Bigger, science will be every day, so that will be good. But I still want them to do the kits because, well, it's just easy for me...I'll be honest. :) :) :) :) Plus, it makes them work together and cooperate on something hands on.

Tina,
I do the same thing! The girls LOVE it! We have really enjoyed the one we have this year. I was hoping to find another one for next year for them to do also. They like just doing experiments on the weekends just for fun. I think it is great!

Sorry I don't want to hijack this thread but I am wondering about the science in Bigger as well.
Would I have to order 2 science packs? (2 boys..one with the extension)
What does it cover?
Cheryl Anne3rd year to HOD and so glad we did!!
2nd year homeschoolers..
Mother to Jesse 12 and Jonah 13
wife to Scott..almost 17 years! WOW
Praying we train them in the way they should go

The science books in Bigger are non-consumable, and are read aloud by you to the student (as is the text in Beyond) so no, you do no need two science packs, only one. The Science in Bigger is done daily. Each child will need his own notebook as described below.

Science Discovery
Science stories are read aloud to the students 4 days in each unit using
the following resources: One Small Square: Seashore by Donald M. Silver,
Science in Colonial America by Brendan January, John Audubon: Young
Naturalist by Miriam E. Mason, One Small Square: Woods by Donald M.
Silver, A Pioneer Sampler by Barbara Greenwood, and Thomas A. Edison:
Young Inventor by Sue Guthridge. These stories provide the focus for this
part of the plans. The areas of life science, physical science, and earth
science are each addressed.
“Science Exploration” topics loosely correspond with the history topics being
studied in the “Learning Through History” part of the plans. When students
are reading about seafaring explorers in history, they will study the seashore
in science. When students are reading about colonial times in history, they
will study science topics that were a part of the colonial era.
While students read about John Audubon in history, they will study his life
and knowledge of birds in the science area. While reading in history about
Daniel Boone and the untamed frontier, students will study the woodland
habitat in science.
As students read in history about pioneers settling the west, they
will experiment with some of the practical science lessons that the pioneers
learned. As students move into the modern era with their history readings,
they will be drawn into Thomas Edison’s life and experiments in science.
Studying science in this manner helps it flow with the study of history and
allows for natural connections to be made between the two areas.
Each unit includes the following science activities in coordination with the
read-aloud assignments:
*Day 1: practice narration by retelling the science story
*Day 2: create a science notebook entry
*Day 3: conduct an experiment related to the reading and log it
in a science notebook
*Day 4: practice narration by retelling the science story
*Day 5: conduct an experiment related to the reading and orally
discuss it
The students need a place to store their notebook and science experiment
entries. You may use either a 3-ring binder with plastic page protectors or a
bound sketchbook with unlined pages.
For more info on Bigger, you can view the intro here http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/BHFHG- ... -07-11.pdf and for Beyond look here http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/beyond ... -intro.pdf
both introductions give lots of info on what is covered in each of these books. Hope that helps :)

And this is the science in Beyond:
Science Discovery
Two days in each unit include simple, discovery activities that are linked
to the history readings. Hands-on exploration in the areas of life science,
physical science, and earth science help children make connections to the
world around them. God’s Wonderful Works by Christian Liberty Press
is referenced as a science text connection for the lessons.
So you would only really need one textbook for both kids, as it is only used as a reference, not being used the way Christian Liberty would have you use it. Although, if you wanted to have two of that text, I don't think it would hurt anything (like if your kids wanted to write in them).

Cheryl Anne-Bigger Extensions includes a reading once a week from the books Exploring Planet Earth and then later in the year Thomas Alva Edison (Landmark) to extend the area of science. The rest of the Extension pack are great historical fiction books that correlate with the time periods being studied. The Extension books are to be read independently by the student, and a daily reading schedule and follow-up activities are listed in the appendix of Bigger. These activities include oral narration (2x a week), written summaries(2x a week), and drawing a picture with a caption(1x a week).
