Foreign Language

Post by Heather4Him » Wed Mar 02, 2011 11:46 am

As we head into high school next year, I'm re-examing choices for Foreign Language. We've casually used some Spanish materials over the years, but nothing ever too serious and nothing that has "stuck".

Now, we're trying to decide WHICH language to do (including possibly ASL or Biblical Greek/Hebrew?), and what curriculum to choose.
Any suggestions??

I should add, our dd's plans most likely include technical college for Veterinary Technician, as well as some work in photography (pet photographer).
So, it's not imperative that we have the formal 2-year minimum for college entrance at this point. So, we're also trying to think what might be the most practical in her future career choices, and if she does decide to go to full Veterinary school at some point, it would be nice to have some foreign language for that.

Latin may be helpful if she were to choose to go to Vet school. We are using and loving Visual Latin plus Latin's Not So Tough. There's also Getting Started in Latin and Getting Started in Spanish. That's all I can think of now as baby started crying for me!

Heather,

I recently asked a similar question to Carrie. Here's that thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8211

In another thread, Carrie also mentions a little more regarding foreign language for high school. You may have to read a bit to find it in this one. It's in Carrie's comment. It will be the third reply, I believe, toward the bottom (11th paragraph :D ). viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8208

Hope it helps in some way!

I've heard recently that ASL doesn't really count for most colleges in fulfilling foreign language requirements, so if she does end up going to college then that's something to consider. I would probably consider Latin if she's even possibly considering Vet school.
Momma to my 4 sweeties:
DD 14 - MTMM and DITHOR (completed LHFHG, Beyond, Bigger, Preparing, CTC, took a couple years off, and now she's back!)
DS 11 and DD 9 - Preparing(completed 2 rounds of LHTH, LHFHG, Beyond, and Bigger)
DD 6 - LHFHG

Thanks Lisa and Mommamo! That does help!!

I agree that Latin is definitely a strong consideration. Another thing we are considering heavily is actually French (which surprised me at first), but I had 2 years of high school French and a semester of college, plus our church does a lot of mission work to African countries that speak French (and one of the main pastors from Burkina Faso comes to speak at our church sometimes, and he does it all in French, their native language). So, mission work to this country or other African countries where French is the primary language are a real possibility for us.
Plus, we live fairly close to Canada (and Quebec), which is also an interest of ours. SO, I think God may be leading us this way actually (even though I had never really seriously considered it myself). It's neat when His plans are different than what we think, because they are always better! :)
