Carol Joy Seid Seminar a affirmation

Post by Tansy » Sat Mar 29, 2008 10:01 pm

WOW WOW WOW..
This seminar was such an affirmation for me that I Have Found a GEM of a curriculum with HOD! (yes I did plug HOD to a few moms with 4, 5, and 6 years olds that haven't started.)

CJS was all about using literature to teach history I saw lots of Carries recommended books on her book list. (told me not to share it so I will respect that) She was all about not teaching world history till 4+ grade That was important to me, She said that since American history is very Judao Christian it is perfect for teaching little ones about history without yet exposing them to classic's like greece and egypt ect. ect.

She Advocated a Charlotte mason view of schooling which I find with HOD is very much how we spend our days just reversed! (Props for Carrie) Apparently Charlotte says morning for school, afternoons for nature to teach, less structure, children to be out in nature pursuing their passions. WOO HOO I can do that!

I did see CJS as a much more "Hey you can do this yourself" but the Betty in me cringed at trying to do what CJS recommended on my own. So thanks again Carrie your the best having your guide to serve as the back bone of our home school! It gives me such freedom! I know we can wander into some of the CJS books and wander out again as I see them fit well into what you have given us.

Tho She didn't advocate lets read this book then afterward pick it apart to find character settings and moods. She said to treasure the books like an old friend. To read it was a privilege. Yet I found myself disagreeing with her. Remember I'm the one who advocates one month of reading for pure pleasure with my dd then one month of DITHOR. I have found DITHOR to add so much to our learning and then being able to articulate our thoughts and feelings, understanding setting in time ect. as being very enriching experience.

I came away determined to reduce T.V. to approx. 2 hours a week. I felt really convicted in this area. And my dd gets less than 10 hours a week now. And I came home to find a child who had watched 3 movies in the course of the day! ROFL    Well I was gone from 7am to 8:30 pm it was a loooooong time for DH to cope alone. Its nice to be needed
:P

One cute Bridge of Hope child got a sponser and we did sell out on "Even Donkeys speak" I was sooo glad cause its such a wonderful book of true modern mission stories.

Tansy,

It sounds like your seminar was wonderful! I'm so glad that it reaffirmed for you that you were on the right track with your little sweetie's education. I love feeling reaffirmed! It's so much better than feeling like you're headed the wrong way! (An experience I definitely had with my oldest prior to writing our guides.)

Thanks so much for sharing your joy. It is fun to read. Well, I'm off to church! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
