Spelling in beyond

Post by mae357 » Thu Jan 27, 2011 10:27 am

We are on lesson 15 and this week in particular my dd is having a very tough time with the spelling list. She is on day 4 and only got 3 of the 10 correct. In the past weeks, she is getting almost 9 to 10 words correct each time. I'm wondering if I should repeat lesson 15 spelling words next week or just move on? OR is there a way to add more spelling word practice in? I guess I'm not sure if it's better to just keep on or repeat weeks that are hard? Thanks!

My son had a similar problem, I'm not sure if it was in that lesson or a different one. It kind of made us both weary the more we practiced them, so we just moved on. We've just finished unit 18, a review week for the spelling units from previous weeks, and he was actually able to do them much better. I don't know if that helps. I'll be curious to see what others suggest.

Hi there! :D We found the Beyond language arts activities HOD planned in that box in the guide to be so helpful for our sons to internalize the spelling of words better. I know I've missed things in the guide before by accident, and the activities are different than the usual pretest/posttest of spelling words that most of us are familiar with from our schooling experience, so, that's why I'm going to ask if she is doing all of spelling plans in the guide each day? Thanks! :D

She is doing most. I'm not sure but this lesson spelling lesson was really hard on her...

Maybe I'll move on and see how the next lesson goes and then wait for the review week to see if she's retained the info any better.

Could you add one or two to each week as you continue to move on? That way if is is just a particular set of words, your child would only have a couple of harder words a week instead of a whole set.

Thanks for getting back to me! :D It will really help to do the spelling activities that are part of the plans in the Beyond guide. They seem simple, but they pack a big punch! My little guy had speech difficulties, and spelling was not his thing - but the Beyond plans - along with the CM components of copywork and dictation in HOD over the years - have turned him into a good speller. So, there is hope! These methods work. :D Here is a past post that goes into more detail about the purpose of these activities, and how they transition into higher level skills later:

I was thinking too, maybe she could just do half of the spelling words each week for awhile? That would help her be able to focus on fewer words and also learn the steps in the plans more easily. She could do the second half of the spelling words the next week. She could do this until the end of the lists, or go back to doing all the words at any point she seemed ready to do so. There is much flexibility to the way HOD wrote spelling/dictation that can be taken advantage of - HTH!
