DITHOR question

Post by MomtoJGJE » Mon Jan 24, 2011 11:55 am

When they finish the 2/3 workbook, do they just move to the 4/5 workbook? Or do they go through it again with harder books?

I answered and then realized I read your question wrong. I think you're suppose to do it again with harder books.

Did she finish Level 2 books? You use the student book for level 2 and 3 books and then the 4/5 student book for levels 4 and 5 books. My DS is going through his second time in the Level 2/3 workbook this year with Level 3/4 books and is getting a lot more out of it this time around!!! HTH!!! :D

Does this mean that the student ends up using 2 copies of the 2/3 book (one for Level 2 books and one for Level 3 books) or does one student book take us through two levels of reading (2 school years)? I'm going to pull my stuff out and look it over. :D

You go through it two times -- I bought a Level 2/3 WB for last year (his second grade year) with our level 2 books and another 2/3 WB for this year (his third grade year) with level 3/4 books. Does that make sense? :D The only reason to NOT buy a new book each year would be if you are going to do one level over 2 years, which is doable if you want to take it slower and only do half the genres for one year and the other half the next.

Thanks! That's what I was asking, about ordering the workbook again. She's not finished, but I didn't know if I needed to up the difficulty of the books for the second half or just get a new workbook :) Thank you everyone!

Just FYI - HOD has kindly made the student books reproducible for family use, so if you would rather copy pages than order 2 books, you can do that. I used to do that with my first child, but then once I had 2 dc doing DITHOR I decided the student books were so economically priced that it wasn't worth my time to copy them. But, the choice to do so is sure nice! :D

Thanks for that information Julie! I agree that it's not to high a price to just buy a new one when necessary. I don't know that I will ever have two in the same level, except MAYBE in the 6/7/8 level, and once every year or so to buy a new student book isn't so bad.

I just wasn't sure what readers I needed to get.... whether to stick with level 2's or bump her up a bit to be ready for level 4s by next year. :)

Lora Beth,

The ladies already did a great job of answering your question, so I'll just pop-in to mention that if you're currently using the Level 2 Book Pack it actually contains books in the 3.0 - 4.1 reading level. So, you should be fine finishing out that Book Pack in preparation for next year. :D With our kiddos, I always reassess at the end of the year to see if they are going to be ready for a new level Book Pack at the beginning of the next school year. If I feel that the child will be ready, then I just have that child read any remaining books from the current Book Pack over the summer and start the new Book Pack in the fall. If I feel the child won't quite be ready, then I hold back the remaining books to do in the fall instead. Anyway, just a thought as you ponder. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

This has been a very helpful thread! I am LOVING how all the pieces of HOD are coming together in our home already and we've only just begun. I LOVE what we are doing so far. . . DITHR is going to be so good for my DS8. I'm excited for him!

Julie, thanks for the FYI on the workbooks. I agree that it's worth the $$ to buy a prepared workbook. I like how "put together" it is too with a cover and binding. :D
