new to HOD ... pouring over placement
new to HOD ... pouring over placement
Hello!
My name is Erin Kate and this is my first post to this board. I currently home school my oldest in first grade and my middle in preschool ... my youngest is only 2 and tags along for the fun. We have our fourth on the way, a 4ish-year-old little boy from Ethiopia, and he will be here before our next school year begins this July.
I'm sorry if my questions overlap with others ... I've read and reread so many wonderful posts! I hope that I can glean some of the same pearls of wisdom from more experienced HOD lovers.
What I'm trying to do is place my oldest, Gracie, who currently is midway through My Father's World First Grade, in HOD. She is reading well, though I'd still say she is an emerging reader. In a month's time she will have a thorough foundation in phonics, so by the time second grade rolls around this summer she will be "finished" with phonics ... but is anyone ever really finished? Math and science are her passions and she is happily working through multiplication and math facts right now. She has amazing penmanship and is more than ready for cursive. She does quite a bit of copywork, such as copying Proverbs and short poems, and we spend time daily with narration and simple dictation. I believe that she is ready for Bigger, but after reading the boards I sort of feel like maybe she needs to start with Beyond? Is Bigger geared more toward an above-average second grader or third grader? I don't want to extinguish her desire to learn, learn, learn since she loves school so much right now ... so I wonder if it is more realistic to slow down Bigger if I need to versus supplement Beyond if we went that route. Anyone in or been in a similar boat?
The other thing I'm considering are my two middle children, one of whom will be with us from Ethiopia in the next few months. They are very close in age and Ellie is mostly ready for Kinder, though her fine motor skills need a lot of work. She is reading short words and has had two full years of preschool and LOVES her lessons. She is dysgraphic so penmanship will always be a little more difficult for her. Shaw won't really know English, but he will likely pick it up pretty fast, yet and I'm sure that most of our first months will be about English, life, and culture, but I would like to include him with Ellie to give him even more of a sense of belonging since homeschooling is a huge part of our life. That said, could I add more handwriting practice for Ellie and ease things enough for Shaw so that he can listen to the stories at storytime, learn the rhymes, find wonder in the science, hear God's word with the Bible study, and I can tweak phonics and math to more of a preschool level? Or, does Shaw really need Little Hands?
I just don't think that I can realistically 1) afford to buy or 2) give enough time to teach three different programs (if I put Shaw in Little Hands). I wonder how I can eventually get Ellie and Shaw on the same-ish level down the road ... hmm.
Thank you for listening. I'm eager to learn from you!
Erin

Re: new to HOD ... pouring over placement
This is my 2 cents, take it for what it is worth. Having come from 2 1/2 yrs of MFW, I chose to pick the lower guide when my dd fell between two options. I figure you haven't done Singapore 1A yet? Looks like that is scheduled into the Beyond guide and some of the books that would have been done in ADV are scheduled into Beyond as well. If it were me and I was coming from MFW 1st I would choose to do Beyond. The skill building is very important in HOD. If you choose a slightly easier guide you can always speed it up. I thought Preparing might be a little easy for my dd 9 but it has been the perfect fit for us and just the right level to where she can work easily without my having to help her much. I think you will be pleased with how HOD is laid out. Did you look at the samples weeks after looking at the placement chart? beyond- http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/beyond ... t-week.pdf or Bigger http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/BHFHG-first-week.pdf
Maybe looking at those pages will help you decide.

BTW- we are doing LHTH and it only takes about 30 minutes per day. I will be doing LHTH & LHFHG next year and I think doing those two along with my dd doing CTC will still be very manageable.

Hi! We are new to HOD as well and still deciding placement but I wanted to congratulate you on your upcoming adoption! Our youngest is from Rwanda and I can't even begin to tell you what a blessing she has been to us! You are in for an adventure! You will love Africa! We traveled to Ethiopia as well as Rwanda. Good Luck!

Thank you, Edie. We have done Singapore 1A and Miquon Orange. We are now in Singapore 1B and Miquon Red. She is definitely ready for Singapore 2A, 2B, but we will not likely continue with Singapore Math next year. But that is the level she is working at currently.
I love the layout and boxes with HOD. Love it. This is a big draw for me.
Gracie has done ETC 1 and 1 1/2, and is working on Beyond the Code and First Language Lessons, aside from (or maybe in addition to is more accurate) the phonics/language arts in MFW and looking at the first week of each Beyond and Bigger (thank you for the links) she seems more suited to Bigger.
That said, I'm curious if you could expand a little on your comment that "the skill building is very important in HOD." This sounds really interesting ... especially coming from a former MFW home schooler. What skills do you mean? I'd love to pick your brain on this as it will definitely help me in my choice.
Many, many thanks!

Congratulations! We considered Rwanda as well, but at the time we were living in a state that did not allow private, independent adoptions. We cannot wait to travel to Eth ... hope to live there for a few years once our youngest is in preschool.Rwandalove wrote:Hi! Keep in touch about what you decide to use with HOD. Seems like such a wonderful way to home school! I can't wait.

Re: new to HOD ... pouring over placement
The one that comes to mind right away is the oral and written narration. HOD narrations are closer to pure CM style. While the narrations encouraged in MFW are more mixture of classical and CM. I think that was one of the biggest differences for us coming from MFW. I understand that the guides build up those skills at a steady pace. Also the guides slowly build independent skills. So since we are doing Preparing there are less independent subjects assigned for my dd than she will have next year in CTC and so on. I also know that MFW encourages less formal grammar at an early age. We have added in R&S per HOD's recommendations and been pleased. Perhaps more seasoned HODies can tell more indepth the differences between the younger guides. Right now my only experiences are with Preparing and LHTH. But I have been very pleased with both.erin.kate wrote:That said, I'm curious if you could expand a little on your comment that "the skill building is very important in HOD." You can look at the scope and sequence type stuff for Beyond http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/beyond ... -intro.pdf or Bigger http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/BHFHG- ... -07-11.pdf I am also looking forward to looking at all the other materials in person at our local homeschool convention in March.
I would encourage you to call HOD if you have allot of questions. I got to speak to Mike when I called and was trying to decide about a switch and he answered my multitude of questions and was very kind.

Re: new to HOD ... pouring over placement
I talked to Mike today for a nice while ... what an awesome testament to HOD ... and he helped guide me with my dd7's placement for second grade. Carrie is going to look over the email I sent with the story of our home schooling life ( ) ... the materials Gracie is using right now and has used ... and give us her thoughts, too, but it looks like with she will do well in Bigger. From now until summer I will work on spelling with her following the scope and sequence of the spelling patterns in list 1 of Beyond.
The other option Mike suggested is to start Gracie (dd7) in Beyond and speed it up a bit and then move onto Bigger when she shows readiness (we school year around so this is a possible option for us) and since I have three coming up behind Gracie I will then already have the Beyond guide in hand.
I'll see what Carrie thinks and then settle in on a decision. Thank you for all of your help, everyone! You've been most helpful!

Re: new to HOD ... pouring over placement
Just going to add that I would really hesitate to place Shaw in Little Hearts. He is going to be going through a huge transition with a new language and culture. I just think he would miss too much. I wonder if you could place both Shaw and Ellie in Little Hands and do the kindergarten options on the right side of Little Hearts for Ellie if she needs a little more. Then the next year you could use Little Hands with both, using the kinder right side for Shaw and the 1st grade options of the right side for Ellie. After that you could see if they can be fully combined or not. Congratulations on your adoption! We have adopted internationally twice.

You just made my life beautifully easier. Shaw will do Little Hands with Ellie who will also enjoy it immensely, and Ellie will do Little Hearts. We'll see how it goes and slow it down or speed it up for each as they need. Your idea is perfect ... I'm not totally clear on the "right" side "left" side part of this for these two programs, but maybe it will be obvious once they arrive in the mail and I read them through. Thank you! Where did you adopt from?

Re: new to HOD ... pouring over placement
When you get the guide you will see each day is laid out on two pages - that is where we get the left and right side terminology. The right side has the math and language arts, boxes that must be more grade specific. We adopted from Korea and Vietnam. You just made my life beautifully easier.
