Math for Beyond
Math for Beyond
Hi Ladies! I have a question. We are using Horizons Math K right now, but I am considering switching to Singapore for Beyond. I noticed that only the workbooks are listed for 1A/1B in Beyond. But in LHFHG, both the workbooks and textbooks are listed for 1A/1B. Do I need to get the textbooks also for Beyond?
Thank you for your help with this. I can't wait to start back with HOD! We are so excited about the Fall!!

Re: Math for Beyond
Nope-the Beyond manual has teaching activities listed each day to go along with the assigned workbook pages for levels 1A/1B that replace the need for a textbook. The LHFHG manual shows teaching activities for the previous Singapore workbook levels, so you'd need the textbooks with the LHFHG manual and 1A/1B math to give some extra teaching for the concepts in the workbook pages.

Re: Math for Beyond
I find that sometimes the visuals in the textbooks are nice. They help with creating word problems based on pictures as well as provide examples that the workbooks don't provide. They are also in color. However, they are not necessary. Maybe it depends on how comfortable you feel in math. I have a minor in math education, and I like as many "visuals" as I can get to help with teaching. Every child is different, and every parent is different. I don't know if that is helpful, but it gives you an idea of what they are for.

Re: Math for Beyond
Hi Andrea! We've been through the Beyond hands-on activities with 2 of our sons. What I've found is the activities HOD has planned prepare the dc for the workbook lessons to follow so well. I've noticed that if my dc get "stuck" on a problem here or there, days - even weeks - after doing the hands-on lesson, they will grab some counters (usually markers or the favorite - marshmallows ) to quickly use them to solve the problem. It seems like then they are off and running. Eventually they give these up, but in the meantime, the hands-on activities HOD has planned are a strategy that works for them no matter where they are. I see them switching over to mentally doing the hands-ons things too, at which point they have given up the manipulatives. I'd highly recommend doing the hands-on activities with the workbook pages. It has produced 2 strong math students in our family thus far, and I'm confident it will with our third too! HTH!

Thank you all for your help with this. I think I may get the textbooks to have just in case I need another idea to help with a problem.
Re: Math for Beyond
We are using Beyond, but we are using Math 2A/2B.
I am frustrated that we don't get the hands on activities.
We follow the plan in the back of the book, but we don't get the extras, because we are in the next level of Math.
How can we get the hands on for the 2A/2B level of Singapore?

Re: Math for Beyond
Hi Tia! Welcome to the HOD Board! You can easily get your hands on the hands-on plans for 2A/2B by just getting the Bigger Hearts for His Glory teacher's guide. Many mom do this. It is easy to do, and after 2A/2B, the hands-on plans stop, so this is the only time you'd need another guide. I'm doing the 2A/2B hands-on plans now with BHFHG, and I think they make the workbook easy to do. I can tell my ds is using the strategies the hands-on lessons teach him to easily complete the workbook independently then. He is able to give up the hands-on too as he works with a concept more and more. The mental math of Singapore kicks in then. HTH!

Julie,
Should I buy the History package or just the manual?

Re: Math for Beyond
To use just the math, you'd only need the Bigger Hearts manual and not the history package. HTH!

Re: Math for Beyond
Julie,
If I'm going to do Beyond next year, can I buy the manual now, and get the discounted package at a later date?
Or.... to get the discounted price I need to buy the package now.

Re: Math for Beyond
HOD works hard to keep the packages discounted always, so the savings you'd get buying a package is kept available throughout the year. However, you need to purchase the package all at once to receive the package discount. If you buy just the guide, then the purchase price would be the individual price for the guide. I hope that makes sense!

Re: Math for Beyond
Julie,
To me that means... buy the History package now, so I can have the math hands on for the second half of the year, and still save the $$$.
Thanks,
Tia
