Is it okay to repeat LHTH?

Post by Heart_Mom » Tue Jan 18, 2011 12:32 pm

Hi!

We are doing LHTH with my 4 year old this year. We are really enjoying it! My daughter is doing well with it except she's not remembering the sounds of all the letters. She LOVES all the activities in it! :D :D :D

I would like to wait until the Fall of 2012 to do LHFHG with her for Kindergarten, so I'm not sure what to do with her this Fall. I want to wait to start LHFHG for two reasons: 1) she has a late summer birthday and 2) I'd like to be able to do the guide exactly as written for her for Kindergarten. Should I just do LHTH with her again? Or would it be better to try to s-t-r-e-t-c-h out LHTH until then? We're currently in Unit 16, so I think that might be hard to do.

Any thoughts or suggestions for me? :D

Thanks!
Blessings,
Elisabeth

Yes! You can easily repeat it. :D We are!

We went through it for the 1st time last school year with my dd who was 3 and used the younger resources (Child's First Bible & Big Thoughts for Little People).

We're repeating it this year with the older resources (New Bible in Pics for Little Eyes & My ABC Bible Verses) adding in some other activities from a preschool workbook just because my dd loves to do "math" like my ds does. We've also used pages from Do it Carefully & Finding the Answers, too. Then when she goes into the LHFHG guide this fall, I'll be doing it as written only using Thinking Skills instead of the Rod & Staff books we're using this year. I used the Thinking Skills with my son during his Kindergarten year and it worked well for us.

Thanks, Beth, for your reply! :D We are using the New Bible in Pics for Little Eyes, but I think my daughter would still enjoy doing it again. We're using Big Thoughts for Little People, so we could bump up to ABC Bible Verses.

That just might work!

Thanks! :D
Blessings,
Elisabeth

One other question: Should I be concerned that my daughter is not retaining all of the letter sounds? We're up to letter M and she has most of them, but there are a few she's getting mixed up, like J and G. I guess there's still time for her to get them before the end of the year, though. Now I'm leaning more toward starting LHFHG this fall or in Jan. 2011.

What I think makes the most sense is to wait until we're nearing summer to make a decision. I'm sure that a 4 year old's skills can change greatly in 6 months! :D

It is just fine to repeat LHTH, as there are different books that can be used with it, and it is a program that can be done several times because dc are little and just consider it good plain fun anyway. However, I think your statement about waiting to make the decision to see how dd matures is a good idea. For the letter sounds she is having a harder time remembering, I'd just do those individual flaschards daily for a little easy extra practice. The Leap Frog Letter Factory DVD is a fun way to help dc retain those sounds they are learning too. :D

Hi, Julie!

Thanks so much for your reply! :D I will refrain from making my decision until the summer, because I think I'll have a much better idea of where she really is. (It's hard to do, since I really like to plan ahead! ) I have just recently started quickly going over the flashcards daily, and it does seem to be helping. I'll check the Leap Frog DVD out of the library to see what it's all about. Thanks for letting me know about it! :D
Blessings,
Elisabeth
