Birds of the Air

Post by LynnH » Tue Jan 11, 2011 5:35 pm

I can't tell you how much my ds loves this book. This whole science unit on birds in CTC has turned him in to a major bird lover. He is doing the best notebooking pages he has ever done. He is taking such time with his bird pictures. Today it was snowing all day. He was supposed to observe the birds in our yard and then draw a picture. I told him he could observe from the window so he did for quite a while and then during his "recess" he went outside and just stood there watching the birds at the feeder. He tried to get a chickadee to land on his hand. He went back out after he was done and watched them some more. It was so cute. It is even rubbing off on my dd. I hear her yell to him and tell him to come quietly. There sitting out on our trampoline was a huge redtail hawk(thankfully not eating one of his little bird friends)! They were both so excited. He is one of those kids that has never had his one "thing" that he loved. Now he reads bird encyclopedias at night and I just love that he is finding something that can become a lifelong hobby.

Lynn,

I am so excited for you and your little guy! :D It is such a neat thing to see how kiddos get excited about nature through reading living books about God's creation. My own son is an avid bird lover after John Audubon and Birds of the Air and has filled journals with his sketches. :D It even turned him into a bit of an artist as he takes great pains to get each detail of the bird just right. I find that most of my boys' hobbies have come from their school-time, as they carry over their projects long into the day and use them for ideas for summertime too. :D

Thanks for sharing! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Carrie,
Noah missed reading the John Audubon book since we didn't do Bigger. I think I will need to get that one for him to read on his own. We also have sketches of birds taped up all over the house. Pretty impressive for a kid whose hand cramps if he draws for too long. He just finished the Birds of the Air book today and he is so sad. He said he is taking that book up to his room, I'm not to store it away.

Lynn,
This really blessed me!!! I'm so happy for you. You could get him books on birds in your area or even books that play bird calls, etc. My dd has this one. It's just not just our local area though. She loves it and even bought it with her own money. I too love hearing the bird calls. Thanks for sharing. :D

Edwena,
He saw that book last year at co-op and loved it. I think he has forgotten about it. I will have to remind him and I imagine he will want to save up money to buy it. I received binoculars for Christmas, but he is using them more than I am.
