If I tweak RTR for high school how do you grade things?
If I tweak RTR for high school how do you grade things?
My dd will be in 11th grade next year. She has been doing a textbook curriculum this year for history and she is bored. She sees all ds's projects and wants that. Ds will be doing RTR next year. If I tweaked it for her using Carrie's suggestions what do I do about grades? This whole high school credits/transcript thing makes me nervous so just trying to figure out if I do something without tests will the college's accept that? Also if I do RTR with her does she do the extension reading plus all the other reading or do I substitute the extensions in for something.

If you look here:
http://www.heartofdakota.com/scope.php
you will be able to see that HOD has a new guide coming out in the fall...it's the exploration one. They will be calling it Rev. to Rev. here on the boards. If they follow the same guidelines as with the others, and I think they are planning to, then there will be extensions available to use with 14-15 yo's...you could use that program including the extensions with your 11th grader. It will be up on their web site so you can check out all the books some time in the spring...April, I think. Just a thought. You could certainly use RTR and tweak it too....there may be some threads here concerning that......I know there are several moms using programs for older children that are above the age range and it is working fine for them. I'm sure they will chime in soon. We are just starting RTR next week with my ds13 and I ordered the extensions for him to use. We'll see how it goes....I expect it to be challenging enough, though. HTH

I found a recent thread that shows some of what is planned for the new guide coming out in the fall.

Maybe that will help you determine which would be best and if it's enough for your dd.

Sorry...I just noticed your question about testing. I didn't answer that! I am not sure, since my ds is just in 7th grade. We don't test right now except in math. Hopefully others will be able to answer that question for you.

Re: If I tweak RTR for high school how do you grade things?
Hello
I am doing ctc with a 9th grader but beefing it up. First of all, i did not do the extensions but only because my son loves to read and he does lots of extra good reading on his own. I do think it might be a good idea to do the extensions though?? For grades this is what i do ( i cant wait to hear from others on this also!!)- I have a grade book and in it I have grades for algebra, write with the best (or any writing program), grammar (rod and staff), poetry, science, geography, DITHOR, history notebook. We do different math and science than the guide says to, but they so i grade the daily assignments and they also provide tests that i grade as well. Grammar is easy, i grade it and thendivide 100 by the number of problems in the assignment, and subtract the amount for problems missed. For poetry we have my son do his poetry reading in front of the family and/or guests and then assing a number grade according to how well he read and the enthusiasm involved and if he looked at the audience some, etc. For the student history notebook i give a grade according to how neatly the work is done, how thorough ( did he follow the directions ) the naration was done (did he answer all the questions). For DITHOR i havent really decided yet, but thought i would do an overall grade on each genre, and the projects done... just according to how well i think he understood and tried?? For WWTB i just give a grade on the assignment for the day, like if he wrote a paragraph, did he punctuate, capitalize, spell correctly, is it written according to the directions (or style, like a descriptive paragraph). Last for geography and the genesis book i grade maps and questions answered. Really on most of it i try to place a grade on the idea of how well he is trying and if he is really getting the information down. I hope this makes sense??

Re: If I tweak RTR for high school how do you grade things?
I am counting RTR for 9th and I am thinking about the same thing you are on grades. For us Math, LA and Science are easy to grade. It would be the judgment call things that maybe are more difficult. The history is not fill in the blank but it is something that a paper could be written on then that paper could certainly be graded and this is something I am learning towards sort of quarterly. And then there are the history projects that certainly can be graded as far as quality and effort, did they go above and beyond type thing. So that is more material to grade. Bible also could be essay to see what kind of effort is really being put into it along the way. I am also considering oral narration as part of what could be graded. Something where they looked over what had been studied and studied the material for memory then had a more complex narration that tied events together or showed the cause of events. I have to say though I am really confident my dd is remembering the material she reads and it is transferring into knowledge she applies from just what she shows me from our discussion and how she will connect the history together for me.
But I know the point is for a transcript and to have something tangible in the end to grade. Hope something there helps you.
Now as far as the suggested reading and the extension pack. Yes I am doing both. I had some extras I chose myself because I wanted a focus mostly on church history for our extra but also use some of what Carrie recommends. Just linking those to HOD RTR and the extension pack and that is what we are calling our program. So for us we chose it all and I would assume Carrie meant what is in the extension pack and if you felt you needed more to chose among the further suggestions. That is how I read it anyway.
And it is working well for us. HTH!
