My ds doing RTR just found the Beyond books and...

Post by my3sons » Wed Jan 05, 2011 7:02 pm

... read all of Beyond's history spines from cover to cover in a few days! I took out the HOD tubs we are not currently using, and I told the boys they could choose whatever books they wanted from the years they'd already done and read them at their leisure for fun. My oldest ds practically squealed when he saw the "long lost history books of Beyond", and promptly took them all to his room, burying himself in there and reading, reading, reading. My middle ds pounced upon the LHFHG's Thorton Burgess books, and also the Beyond Storytime books I didn't read to him last year. My oldest ds has had his eye on "those wonderful Eggleston" books from Bigger Hearts for awhile too, but I don't ever let a sibling read books from a program I'm doing with another one of our dc. I like to keep them special just for that child. But, I can tell the Eggleston books are going to get put to good use again by my oldest once my middle ds finishes Bigger Hearts. Likewise, my middle ds has been wanting to read Emmett's LHTH's "The New Bible in Pictures" again. My oldest has also been reading the PHFHG's and CtC's Extension packages too (just whichever ones he wants to), as well as the CtC read alouds we didn't read. I love that the boys love what they are reading, and can read above, below, and at their "optimum" reading level with great joy! Anyway, I just had to share how much my dc enjoy the book choices in HOD, the first time... the second time... and even sometimes the third time... they read them! We sure do get our use out of HOD books. :D

LOL! Julie, you can certainly understand why I don't want to part with any of ours :D They are also favorite "non-school" reading material here, and I treasure them as an excellent family library :)

I totally agree! :D My kids love to read them again on their own. I even have heard fights over who gets them to use with their own kids. :D Little do they know that I will have the best Grandmommy book shelves around.

I retyped that response to you a bunch of times with this very thought in mind! I know that this is the very reason it is oh so difficult to part with any HOD books unless a greater need shows itself. After wrestling with my response to you, I decided I longed for you to have the next guide just a tad more than I longed for your dd to hang onto her beloved books. Tough call - I know! But you will know best there. I am still praying for you and the house situation - I just wanted you to know I haven't forgotten that, and I am remembering you in prayer.

Love in Christ,
Julie

My ds 7 who is currently in Bigger, is so excited to sit in on the Thornton Burgess readings with his younger brother and does not want to miss out. I have to restrain him from narrating and or answering questions. He actually remembers most of it from doing LHFHG a few years ago. He also has enjoyed reading Pioneers and Patriots this year on his own. :D

I don't know how you get them to read all those books. My 9.5 yr. old would rather play than read books. If he reads for leisure, it is something he is highly interested in (which has been duck hunting for the last 5 mos.) He reads the assigned book I give, of course, but beyond that almost nothing.
