Question about Singapore for my 7 year old

Post by tnahid » Wed Jan 05, 2011 1:19 am

We are almost finished with the 1B workbook for this year, and I have ordered the 2A workbook along with the textbook. I have not been good about keeping up with the math in HOD, as my son just does several workbook pages on his own each day, and I check them and we go over whatever he has missed. He is very good it seems at math right now. But, when I start 2B, if I wanted to follow the Beyond guide with it, where would I start?

Would I need the textbook for 2A as well as the workbook if I followed the HOD Beyond guide or what? Thank you...and oh, did I mention that I DON'T LIKE TEACHING MATH! :? My oldest does it on computer (Teaching Textbooks) and that is working great for him. Although, he still doesn't have all his multiplication facts memorized, and it seems that the 3rd grade level of Teaching textbooks doesn't really emphasize multiplication memorization. What is up with that?

Thanks!
Tina

We have enjoyed the hands-on math lessons in 2A/2B so much. They are short, often involve cereal pieces or chocolate chips or something (a hit with everyone  ), and they teach the concept in a fun way that transfers well to the later mental math in Singapore.

For 2A/2B You have 2 options. :)

Option 1:
Use the schedule in the Appendix of Beyond for 2A/2B. This uses the 2A/2B Textbooks to teach the lessons, and then dc do the follow ups in the 2A/2B workbooks. It does not have hands-on lessons.

Option 2:
Get the Bigger Hearts.. guide. The daily plans have hands-on lessons that are used to teach the concepts. Therefore, the textbooks are not needed. The workbooks are scheduled in the daily plans along with the hands-on lessons, and they are done independently.

This would be the only year you'd need to get the next guide, as 2A/2B is the last year of hands-on lesson plans. The following year, in PHFHG, both 3A/3B and 4A/4B are scheduled in the guide.

We have loved the hands-on option, but you will know what you'd like best here! :D

thanks so much, Julie. We will probably stick with using the appendix this time since I already ordered the textbook anyway. And I already have the Beyond book. Thank you for your help!
