A question about HOD and grades

Post by Kim S » Sat Dec 11, 2010 7:29 am

Someone posted this in another thread
If you start Beyond in 2nd grade, HOD will take you (as of now) through 9th grade..... if you use Beyond with a 1st grader HOD will (obviously) take you through 8th
I think I am missing something. Are the older years meant to use for more than a year? Because the way I have it figured we will only get to go through 6th grade. My plan was a guide each year. This year we are doing LHFHG and he is in K. So that puts him in 6th grade finishing R to R.
I don't know much or haven't seen the older guides but thought they were written to go a year per guide. Can you all help? I know he is only in K but honestly I want to have it all planned out.

They are to be done one a year, although some people do find they need to slow things down to half speed if their child is on the lower age for the guide. There will be 2 more guides released after RTR that will take your child to 8th grade and then Carrie plans to release a geography grade that will be for 9th grade.

I have started my kids with Kindergarten in LHFHG and the way i figure it , that geography year will be used for 8th grade for us, not 9th as previous poster stated if you meant using Rev to Rev for 6th and RTR for 5th. At least when i figure a guide a year when using LHFHG for Kindergarten that is what i get. I want it planned, too, so i know where we are headed.
Hope that isn't confusing.

Yes it looks like it would be 8th grade for me too. I guess I am just confused. I didn't know two more guides were coming out. Which will be great.

I'll be following this plan too with my oldest! He is in fifth grade doing RTR right now, so for 6th. he'll do Rev to Rev, in 7th. he'll do the next guide that finishes out to modern times, and then he'll do the Geography guide for 8th. grade. He's done so well with the pacing he's been using through the years, and I know he'll continue to thrive. It's fun to know others will be on that path as well! :D :D :D

Thank you for that. It helps me to see the big picture.
I know some must think I am crazy but honestly I see where I failed in areas with my older kids and I really want to be planned and organized for my younger ones.

I know this may sound weird, but what would one use for the higher grades? Like 10th, 11th and 12th? What curriculum is recommended at that point, or are there plans to keep developing curriculum all the way through each year? If so, we might be able to use HOD all the way. My oldest in only 9 now!

But if not, then seriously, what curriculum would you recommend at that point?

Just curious.

I have, obviously, no idea what Carrie would recommend. I will, however, share what we've done/are doing for high school. I have a senior that technically could be graduated, but we've decided to continue thru spring.

We used the Truthquest guides for history and tied them with lit and writing. This was the bulk of his studies with everything else kind of coming out of it. He struggled with grammar so we used R&S. He wasn't crazy about it, but learned a ton. Had he used R&S all along I'm sure he would have been where he needed to be by 9th grade. He didn't come home until 7th. We used Apologia for Physical, Biology and Chemistry (not sure they'd be my first choice now, but they are very good). He's now taking Forensic Science at the high school. We used Teaching Textbooks for Alg 1 & 2 and Geometry. He ended up taking a consumer/business math at the high school since it worked into his schedule. Had he taken it at home I would have done Dave Ramsey. He has a great high school program. My ds is watching DRs videos to give him, at least some, of his perspective. Then we've added in lots of rich Bible and character studies, electives (Spanish, graphics, etc). I think he's had a rich, rounded high school experience. It's focused a lot on good reading, adding in enough "textbooks" to get the job done, topping it with electives that will help in either college or life.

I would also like to know what Carrie would recommend for high school and also whether or not she plans to create more guides after the geog. My older son is a 6th grader using CTC. He will use HOD into high school even though some of it will have to be beefed up for us to do so.

Thanks for letting me know what you did/are doing for high school grades. It sounds like he has had a great education! That is encouraging to me. Blessings!

Ladies,

Rest assured that the current planned scope and sequence of HOD guides will take your kiddos through 8th grade (at the minimum) and will prepare your children very well for high school. We currently have our own 9th grader this year and are very pleased with his school year and his progress. We feel he was very well-prepared for high school and have had a great year thus far. :D We will definitely share our recommendations with you for high school when we get to that point in the writing of the guides. We plan to take very good care of our customers and to work to make sure your students have the opportunity to receive an excellent education that honors the Lord first and foremost. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
