DS's First Poem!

Post by 3sweeties » Tue Nov 16, 2010 12:04 pm

Hi all,

Just wanted to celebrate the poem my DS wrote TOTALLY on his own today for school...we are in Unit 4 of Preparing and have been studying Robert Louis Stevenson's poetry.

Like Me

I think about me at play,
And another child far away.
I see him playing outside like me,
Which he will see, I garuntee,
I will see him too one day,
Even if he's far away.

He said it was a poem about his friends that have moved (he had about 3 move far away over the past year or so). This English-degreed momma is soooo proud!

Love it! :D

We absolutely loved the poetry writing in Preparing!!! I couldn't believe how it got the wheels turning for Grant. Never would I have guessed that writing poetry would have been one of his favorite things...but it was! I'm in the process of making a shutterfly book of his poems and giving it to him for Christmas. Enjoy the poems in Preparing! We sure did!!

Oh that's lovely!! I can definitely see how it was inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's poetry. What great poetry, especially for someone so young! I can definitely see why you're proud.

I really love how all of HOD really leads to a love of poetry. We're just in Bigger and doing it with my oldest, but both the 7 yo and the 4 yo have been so inspired to write their own poems. I'm so glad to hear that writing poems is actually part of the lesson plans in Preparing. That is definitely something fun to look forward to.

Thanks so much for sharing that! I love getting little glimpses into all we have in store for us in future guides.

Way to go! :D He even put emotion into it, intuitively choosing a topic that struck a chord in him. PHFHG's poetry lessons took my ds by the hand and walked him down the lane of poetry writing in such an effortless, beautiful way. I am so excited to get to do PHFHG again with my other 2 dc down the road, it makes me confident all my dc will learn to write creatively - even the ones it doesn't really come all that naturally for. Hooray for your ds! :D

Jessica,

Your son did a wonderful job on his poem! :D I am always amazed at the way that modeling writing after great poets brings out the budding poet in children. :D Thanks for sharing! I'm so proud of your little guy too! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
