What are your thought?

Post by yayadaisy » Thu Mar 20, 2008 10:08 am

Okay I have another question. I was doing MFW Adventures for my 2nd grader until about a week ago and we have stopped and just been focusing on reading, math and writing instead. Reading and writing is where is LD is so instead of going at the pace of MFW I dediced to take a break and found that we like it and he is so more into school now. He doesn't get so stressed and upset. He really had a hard time with the spelling. So my thoughts are I have gotten beyond for him and my K to do next fall, but thought maybe we should start it now and do it three days a week until we are done which would probably be next spring aways if we only did it three days a week. We have other things going on during the week so three days would really make it so much easier with less stress for everyone. I will also be doing LHTH with two others in the fall. What are your thoughts on this? I hate the thought of not finishing MFW but Beyond covers some of the same things again, but in a better way and because he is behind anyways in reading and writing I think another week of just the three R's and then starting beyond would be okay. Help please I just want to do the right thing?

To me it sounds perfect for your family. And on the side when you have LD with a child you will have to walk away from something at some time. I have had to walk away from several phonics programs or just hit as far as we could go with one. You just have to do what works sometimes. 8) I balance it with the though of how much we would pay to have a private tutor who would probably stick with what they had on hand.

I think about what I remember from elementry education.. Not much is the answer. I really think at this age we need to teach them to LOVE the LORD, Love learning, and Civilize the little sweethearts.

I bought one reading program that just did not work. It was not cheap I finally gave up and another lady at the ministry used a 20$ book (100 ez lessons) to teach my dd how to read. And taught me how to use that crazy looking book . You never know what will work. My dd has/ had developmental delays, speech issues. I think doing Beyond at a relaxed pace over a longer period of time is just fine. I do know when I put lots of pressure on my dd to catch up it just caused lots of problems, and stress in the whole family.

Did u see Carries post I can't remember what thread it was but it was all about how even ps teachers do not finish everything. So release yourself from the bonds of self imposed "we must finish" I been there done that it ain't pretty.

That post was entitled "Has anyone ever NOT finished an HOD curriculum?" I was glad that Carrie weighed in and mentioned that many times ps teachers do not finish...I was feeling a bit guilty that we didn't.

Shiela,

I think your plans sounds perfect! A 3-day plan will give your little honeys more time to focus on the 3 R's which are SO important at this age. It will also keep you steadily moving forward without overwhelming your kiddos in the other subject areas, which is also so important.

Once they have made steady gains in the 3 R's, your kiddos will be more ready for "Bigger...". Getting your feet wet this year, will also help you get a feel for how your days will look with HOD.

Blessings,
Carrie

Thank you so much! I think it is the right way to do things for my oldest who has the LD. It really has helped me to know that not even teachers in the ps finish sometimes. I really think if he was still in ps he wouldn't be where he is now so what's a grade level all about anyways? He has made great improvements this year so far. I know I can trust God to lead me in the right way and a little encouragement along always helps! Thanks!
