Science Decisions for the Next Guide?

Just wondering if Carrie has made any decisions about the science for the next guide yet. I hope I haven't missed it if so. The spines for the history portion look great! I really like the incorporation of world history events.

We haven't shared our resources yet for the science for the upcoming guide, but I must say that we are very excited about them. Since this will be a physical science year, we will be focusing on inventors and inventions. We have some wonderful living books selected and some options that will really help our customers customize the science to fit their kiddos unique abilities.

Our plan at this point is to have two boxes devoted to science each day in the upcoming guide. One box will be inventor-based, focused on living books with notebooking, and one box will be experiment based. This will allow us to keep a living books approach to science while still making sure to include a strong scientific method component worthy of the middle school years. The guide will even have the option of an extension in science for students considering the possibility of using the science for 9th or 10th grade science credit (depending on your state science standards for high school and whether the child will be progressing into a science-related field upon graduation or not). Those who are progressing into a science-related field would likely want to stay on the Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and one other advanced science course path instead for high school.

I will come back and update this thread with our plans for science a bit more completely as time allows. Right now I am knee-deep in reading, reading, reading on the quest to find wonderful storytime and extension pack titles for the history section of our guide. The search is taking much time and effort, but I know the Lord will bring those books to us that He wishes to have in our guide. We pray daily for His guidance.

Thanks Carrie for that update. Though my dc are years away from that guide, I read with anticipation the upcoming science curriculum. I'm a science lover so I am really excited about the plans you have for the guide. It sounds so wonderful to keep the living book/notebooking approach and yet have the experiment side too. I am thrilled! I love the era of inventions and inventors too so I think I will love the year that we do this guide.

Thank you for taking the time to search out all of the wonderful books for the HOD programs. I always know that any book you recommend will be suitable for my dc. Thanks for doing my pre-reading for me! I will continue to keep you in my prayers as you prepare the upcoming guides.

Ladies,

Alright, I have a bit more time today to pop back and share our current thoughts for the science in the guide to come after RTR. We're still working on the name of the guide but our resources for the guide are coming together very nicely already (as we've been planning on them since this past summer and fine-tuning as we go).

For the physical science focus of the guide, we will schedule living biographies of inventors in the physical science field for one of the science boxes in the plans three times each week. This box will likely include a science reading and a brief follow-up assignment to be completed within the student notebook. Follow-up assignments will include a combination of oral narration, written narration, and a notebook entry of some sort (such as writing a written narration, adding to a timeline of the person's life, and/or coloring a picture of one of the inventions). At this point our plan is to include one full-color notebook page for each inventor within the history student notebook.

The living biographies we are planning to include are as follows:
The spine of the biography box will be Story of Inventions, Second Edition by Bachman. We will integrate other biographies within the spine as they fit chronologically. These biographies include:
Michael Faraday by Charles Ludwig
Four American Inventors: Thomas Edison, Eli Whitney, Samuel Morse, and Robert Fulton by Frances M. Perrry (Yesterday's Classics is publishing this book specifically for our guide, and it is truly a wonderful book)!
Henry Ford by Hazel Aird and Catherine Ruddiman
Always Inventing (Alexander Graham Bell) by Tom L. Matthews
They Gave Us Wings (Wright Brothers) by Charles Ludwig

Note: We are also including a biography of George Washington Carver under the history read-aloud section, as he was a truly gifted scientist and inventor who lived during this time period. He is not included in the Science box of this particular guide, as his area of research was not in the physical science field, which is the science focus for this guide.

The other science box within the guide will be devoted to utilizing the hands-on experiments in Exploration Education Physical Science. Younger students will use the Intermediate version (requiring 3 days each week) and older students desiring high school credit in Physical Science will use the Advanced Version (requiring 5 days each week). We are very excited to be able to carry the Exploration Education Science Curriculum and to be able to partner with this truly excellent company. Carrie I knew you had said last year at the Cincinnati Convention you were considering Exploration Education. I am so glad that plan stuck. Noah loved that program at the convention. My dh who is an Engineer was also very impressed.

That looks incredible! I really love being able to see what's coming. Even though we're only in Bigger, and we're stretching it over 1 1/2 years, I feel so encouraged to know what to expect. I think it makes me even more confident that we've chosen the right thing with HOD, because I'm able to see the big picture of how much my children will be able to grow along with the curriculum. I'm so glad that you're excited about the upcoming science! We enjoy offering a different science option from those that are currently available many other places. We do realize that families may easily choose a different science path for the middle school years than what we schedule in our guides, however it is great to have a living books option scheduled within the HOD guide to ponder as an option as well. No matter what you choose for science though, the rest of the HOD guide is so rich and full that you will still enjoy its benefits fully.

Even though we have awhile before we get to that guide when we get there, my dd will be in sixth grade, and my ds would be in eighth grade. I was wondering based on what you said above what the suggestion would be for them either the Intermediate or the Advanced? I ask this because the website makes it sound like they would do the Advanced Version, but above you state those wanting High School credit would do the Advanced and the younger students would do Intermediate. So now I'm a little confused. I know a little crazy to be looking so far ahead, but I just wanted to make sure I'm understanding correctly and would love your opinion and input.

Oh, and I'm super excited about the biographies on these men!!! So happy you've included George Carver, what an amazing man!!!
