Re: Week in Review 10/11-10/15
Hope everyone had a wonderful and blessed week! We sure did!
BEYOND
My son had 3 projects that he absolutely ADORED. First, we made a picture of HIM and put a Bible Verse in "his" pocket.
Then, we studied the Mayflower. Ds had a hard time understand all that happened in England with the Speedwell and the Mayflower, so we had to draw some pictures and talk about it a bit. He did enjoy making this mayflower ship and he had fun putting the "barrels" on the ship too. Unfortunately, he had to stop and eat a barrel every 10 seconds, so getting 180 on the ship probably took him about as long as it did the pilgrims!
And this was our Science project for the week. We learned about how a pilgrim almost drowned in the ocean. For this experiment, we made blue water by using food coloring. Then, we added oil and watched it float on top. After that, we added salt, shook the bag, and watched how the salt had made the oil heavier and now it was sinking...just like the pilgrim who fell overboard on the Mayflower. My son loved this project!
And this is a picture of a tree, in full fall foliage, in our driveway. I thought it was absolutely beautiful and wanted to share some of God's amazing artwork with you all too!
CREATION TO CHRIST
We did the last day of Unit 7 and days 1-3 of Unit 8 this week. In these pictures, my son is explaining the Ark of the Covenant, the parting of the Jordan River, and the stacking of the stones to represent the twelve tribes.
I also want to share the descriptive paragraph my son wrote today for Write with the Best. I am so impressed with this program. It is really allowing my ds to show some talent in writing and it is done in such small bites that everything is do-able and nothing is overwhelming for him.
A Walk in the Forest
As I walk in the Forest one spring morning, my senses come alive. As I go up a path of soft, wet pine needles under leaves in a path of gold, I can smell the rich pine scent from the trees beside me. As I walk, leaves crunch under my big, black shoes and squirrels scamper playfully in front of me on the path. At the top of a small hill, I stop to rub the rough bark of the green trees, alive with dew drops glistening in the morning sun. Finally, as my walk comes to an end, I venture through a tall, wide passage where trees cover overhead like a canopy. Isn't the forest an amazing place?
Here is his Science paper on question day. We are working on answering in complete sentences and making sure everything is spelled correctly. I know there is a lot of red on this paper...but I wanted to show it here because, 1. his work isn't always perfect and 2. Because he has come a very, very long way in the last 8 units. This is almost a full page of work and he did it well enough the first time for me to make only a few notes and helps, correct his misspelling of the word horse about 6 times (!!) and not make him redo it! Yay! Baby steps.
And, since we are on the two weeks without a poetry painting, I thought I would show off what my ds11 is doing in his co-op art class. He loves art. He has been working on this for about 3 weeks now. He drew and painted this from looking at a picture as his example. I love and treasure it.

LHFHG(1/2 pace): Unit 1
Luke had some great fun again with LHFHG, he is doing very well and is the type that moves on with the activities. We do it all in 1 sitting one thing after the other. We rotate activity boxes so that we do not have 2 boxes following that require mental energy.
Math, Luke's favorite was a hit with continuing to write his numbers. We picked number 2 and 5 to walk on and put that number cans around them and than jump over them. You can see in this picture that he was taking the jumping as serious fun I really like the activity of writing the numbers on each others back after tapping the person and letting them know your number. So we asked big brother to help us.
Someone decided to walk around the house with the music CD so at the beginning of the week we had to sing the song ourselves. Since we have all heard it for many years (we've had even before HOD days), the kids did their own accompaniment.
Luke takes his fine motor skills very serious. He wants to do the best he can and needs to be encouraged that we learn from our mistakes Of course dd wants to do her seat work so I ended up getting her 2-3 yr old R&S workbook
Are we having fun with Reddy Fox. Even my older ds wants to sit in on the readings. Here is the letter Luke dictated for me to write and he signed his name on the bottom.
The weather is so nice here, it's cool in the daytime. We did our memory verse outside bouncing the ball back and forth while rehearsing it.
Enjoying the rhyme in motion... and learning how to waddle like a penguin...Here Luke and Mae are waddling to Antarctica.
In science this week we did some cool activities. The earth going around the sun in a year and singing: Happy Birthday dear earth, you are now 1 year old and so on! The flashlight was the sun and the kids circled around like the earth.. fun...fun...fun..
The other fun activity that had to do with creation was that the kids had to distinguish between land and water animals... Here they are flying (eagle) to land, swimming like a fish to water and stomping like an elephant.
Lastly we did a little puzzle together to say the memory verse from this week Luke called and shared his verse with one of Daddy's partners and he was blessed.
We had some interesting conversations this week with history and creation. We have been doing catechism with fam. devotions and it was neat to see him say his verses about creation and linking the info.
Thank you Carrie for making learning fun for Luke this week.

BIGGER 1/2 pace: Unit 19
We slowly began unit 19 as Elijah is on fall break and only doing school on the days that we are at home. We went to Mote Marine and had a blast on Monday.
For math he is getting it well and doing a great job with the additions.
One big milestone we hit is that Elijah was able to tie his shoe this morning... Such a FINE MOTOR skill is a stretch for my GROSS MOTOR boy..We got him tie shoes and he had no choice, but to learn how to tie them. Still need a little work on it, but it must go with the development of the handwriting.
We started copying the poetry this week, we had been holding off on so much handwriting. Will see where we end up at the end of the unit and how the his illustration turns out!
The hymn we add to our family devotions. We have switched from pm (hard to be consistent) to am. So the whole family sings along.
For history he learned that Thomas Jefferson was the third President and we made a 3-D star for our art project. He wanted to send it with Daddy who had come home around lunch time, but we were not finished yet. The best part about it was that I had him read the directions and come up with a design without me in the room looking over his shoulders, yeah independence is on the way
Adjectives, adjectives, adjectives.... It's a tough one, but he is getting it. There is much thinking going on and much guessing at times what's the noun and what's the adjective. After doing a couple of lessons it is starting to sink in. I just love R&S for the fact that they explain things so well and there is plenty of repetition....Good choice Carrie
A little look into our very short week!

Re: Week in Review 10/11-10/15
Just wanted to share 2 things. First, we managed to make the air-dry clay with cornstarch, toothpaste, glue and water, but had to add about one more tablespoon of cornstarch than the recipe called for. It made a weird dough that kind of flattened as it sat to dry. But it looks like my daughter will have beads and a pendant to paint Second, a neat connection. I assigned Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin for DITHOR biography. My daughter reminded me that back in grade 3, when she did Bigger before going to public school for grade 4 and part of grade 5, she learned about Benjamin West. She even looked through her old history notebook and found the page she had made to prove it to me-awesome!

That would be the volcano with lava hardening to magma! It was ooey-gooey and a hit with the boys! I loved the pictures of your dc. The portrait and Scripture verse was so cute, and so was his Mayflower. He looks like he's having a blast with Beyond! Your older ds's projects looked lovely. I am impressed with his "A Walk in the Forest" from WTW. WOW! I think he has a beautiful way with words, and I bet God's creation showcased around him (as I saw in the lovely picture of the tree in your drive) proves to be excellent motivation! I have to say his writing is VERY neat too. Wow - I hate to sound stereotypical, but for a boy his writing is off the charts!Tree House Academy wrote:Julie,

moedertje - I loved seeing all of your neat pictures!!! There's no chance Luke has a mini-tramp he jumped on for that jumping picture is there?!? WOW - he caught some serious air there! The pictures of you with all of your dc on the couch reading to them was precious. I also liked the picture of your whole family doing the music/devotions together. The Lord must be loving your homeschooling days - such praise and glory brought to Him! Elijah had a good start with his poetry copywork too - very neat writing! Thank you so much for sharing - I always find it very uplifting to me to see your dc doing HOD - I'm a lucky fly on the wall.
