Hi,
The four year cycle is when you cover ancient-modern day in 4 years, 2-3X in a child's schooling. It usually starts with Creation/Ancients through Greeks or Romans the first year, Rome (or end of the Roman Civilization depending on which curriculum you use)-the Middle age the 2nd year, Explorers through around 1850 the 3rd year and 1850 (or depending where you stop the previous year) the fourth year, then you start the cycle again.
If you start the cycle in first grade then you can cover it 3X by the time they finish 12th...some (like HOD) do an overview and focus on American History the early elementary years and then around 4th or 5th grade start the cycle and cover it 2X.
