Educating Myself in Charlotte Mason...How?
I want to better educate myself in the Charlotte Mason methodology. I have the multi-volume set, but I have dreaded reading it
It is (obviously) very long, and the language is archaic.
I was wondering about the summaries of this set that you can order from Ambleside Online...
Or is there a book that sums it up, but gives a good amount of detail?
I can't wait to hear your recommendations!

A Charlotte Mason Companion is an excelent book. I would start with that if you do not want to read the originals.

One of my all time favorite books for encouragement on CM style and homeschooling is A Pocketful of Pinecones. I also loved the CM Companion book.

Good question, Shannon. I'd like to do the same thing, and I too, would prefer to avoid reading long archaic language filled books to do so. I really wasn't at ALL familiar with CM philosophy before HOD and still know very little. So thanks for posting this. I'll have to check out the books the ladies have recommended here. I'm glad I'm not the only CM newbie here.

Another one that I've started reading is "For the children's Sake" by Susan Schaeffer Macauley. I'm not that far into it, but so far it's talking about Charlotte Mason. I believe that's the overall purpose of the book. it's also very readable.

Hi!
You may also want to look @ simplycharlottemason.com. I attended a seminar last year given by the creator of this website & until then I knew very little about Charlotte Mason. I was using HOD, but it was my first year homeschooling & was pretty clueless about a lot of things. (I'm still learning! ) She has several articles posted about the CM method, who Charlotte Mason was & why she believed the way she did. There are also several free resources you can download.

Re: Educating Myself in Charlotte Mason...How?
I have found that Simply Charlotte Mason is similar to Ambleside in regards of using the EXACT curriculum that CM would have used. I find that is not practical to teach English History to a 1st grader. HOD does a great job of taking her general ideas of schooling and making them more modern. Another great website with articles on CM is Living Books Curriculum. They have some great articles on using CM but making it more appropriate for today and living in America.

Anything by Karen Andreola and Catherine Levison would fit the bill. Check your local library as mine had all the books.

Cindy Rushton has audios and "mom to mom "radio show episodes where she explains a lot about Charlotte Mason that is an easy way you can listen while doing houseowrk or on the computer. A book I enjoyed was "When Children love to Learn"
