Since we don't have school today I'll post early or it won't get done.
LHTH: Since dh is schooling Little J this year I don't have much to report - other than I hear a lot of "Are you listening ___, sit still ___."
BEYOND:
LITTLE BROTHER JOINS IN FOR MATH!
This week we were making subtraction equations with an ant hill and chocolate chips (one of Carrie’s great activities). Little J was immediately attracted to the proceedings and was taking it all in as I was making stories and Big J was writing and solving the equations. After a few equations Big J was writing and talking “5 – 3 = ”, but before he could finish Little J yelled out “2.” Big J was perturbed that Little J was “messing him up,” but mommy was pleased that Little J (turns 4 in November) was taking in more than chocolate chips.
STUDENT REMEMBERS BETTER THAN MOMMY
First, I am so pleased at how well ds is doing with the poetry. Given that he currently below the recommended age for the guide, I was not too sure how he would do with some of the poems. He seems to really love them however, and this week when I read the new poem he yelled out a title as soon as I was done reading. I was telling him that this poem was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a famous poet from a long time ago and he said “We had him before mommy.” Me, “We did???” “Yes, in the library book, remember mommy?” (no)
. Then I remembered at the beginning of the summer I had checked out two library books on Paul Revere and one was the famous poem, which I knew was written by a famous poet but the actual name was slowly coming back to me. I replied, “You mean the Paul Revere poem?” “Yes mommy, Longfellow wrote that.” 
Oh my, I fear we will have more of these episodes as time goes on. It is so fun to teach little sponges, but I so wish my sponge was operating at full capacity. 
UPS AND DOWNS OF NARRATION
Narration has been a slow work in progress for us. There was a day last week when dh had to school Big J, then we had a couple of days off and the weekend. When we got back to storytime I asked Big J to tell me what happened last time so I wouldn’t be lost in the story. He gave the best narration of his little life.
I was so pleased and thought we had gone over a hump. We did that day’s reading and he was to give a narration; Once again I got the blank stare. How can a child narrate so well several days out and have a blank stare immediately after reading? I have been reading some threads and remember that I should be taking very small sections and have him narrate, so I am really going to work on that in the coming week. I know it will come, narration is not something learned overnight.
LEARNING CURVE FOR MOMMY
Teaching a strong melancholic can be interesting. There are moments when you are blown away, like the poem example above and there are moments when you, well, you just wish the child could have a little more phlegmatic in him. Example, we are doing the penny exercise for math and after he tosses the pennies I ask him if he would like to separate heads and tails before writing his equations. I would just throw them into two groups, but Big J lines them in a straight, two-column row with the tails and heads perfectly lined up as well. Now we can do math. When it is time to write spelling words he carefully draws two columns of boxes before we begin (yes, this was my child that lined up his toys all day long from 14-36 months of age). Last year I read a book for parents on temperaments and it was an eye opener. Suddenly school-related issues that had been puzzling me (like his extreme hesitance in doing the action rhyme) made sense to me. Even as Big J has been learning, I have been learning too – learning how to address his temperament and school him in manner that gives him success, builds confidence, and lessens frustration.
FUNNY OF THE WEEK
During math one day Big J was staring at the page. I thought he needed further clarification and began to tell him something when he interjected, “Mommy, you are messing up my mind!” No, I don’t recall messing up our children’s mind being in our homeschooling mission so next time I’ll wait patiently for him to ask for help.

We had a wonderful week! We are still a day or so off the guide (we are ending the week on day 2, Unit 5 for CTC and day 3, Unit 5 for Beyond). Here are some pictures of the fun we had this week.
CTC:
Here is our Egyptian Palace Bread when it came out of the oven. YUM!
And the boys giving it a try. My little fella LOVED it. Ds11 thought it was a bit too sweet (I concur).
Ds a good start on his painting, but will finish it next week:
Beyond:
We started the new Adventure storytime genre by having a treasure hunt.
Here is ds6 finding his "treasures."
His favorite lesson in Singapore 1A thus far

DS6 enjoying Singapore math again. I honestly went from a kid who loathed all things math to a kid who begs to do math first! I can't believe it took me this long to switch to Singapore!!!

You can see our week here. Somehow I got all our pictures lower in the post. I really loved how ds' copywork and illustrating the poem turned out. I know he's going to have a wonderful keepsake by the end of the year.
I am just loving HOD. As I say in my blog post that I just find myself throughout the day feeling so happy and never burdened down. I'm able to keep up on other household duties without feeling stressed. We even had company last night and I didn't feel like I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Even that didn't make me feel stressed. Much different than our past years with homeschooling.

Bigger Hearts (half-speed):
Riley is back to BHFHG half-speed. I struggled with this decision for awhile, as he is very able and more than ready to do it full-speed. But, he is my super creative little guy. I was rushing him through projects and not giving him the extra time he wanted to be very creative with them. So, I made the decision to go back to half-speed, though he is doing 4 days a week of DITHOR, hearing daily Storytime, and has an illustration time for his poetry. He is back to LOVING school and would do it all day if I let him, but I need school to be done by early afternoon at the latest for various reasons - mainly for me to get done the rest of what I need to get done in life with a cheerful attitude and a somewhat sound mind.
Riley's ever-growing timeline:
Riley reading his poem... Riley-style with a microphone turned up with maximum ehco... and him reading another poem... and another poem... you get what I'm talking about here, right?
Riley with his poem copywork and illustration. He decided to also copy his Bible verse in the stones on the road of the picture. The verse went really well with the poem!
Riley's block house he built again... and again... and again... well after school was over, letting me know each one was more "secure":
Riley's ONE vocabulary card. Yes ONE. I cannot imagine him doing 3 yet. He did "wampum". He wanted to look it up on the computer and find an authentic wampum belt picture to draw. Having found the "crosses" one, he went to drawing every wampum bead one by one:

My oldest ds is a get-it-done kind of guy that was not so interested in the creative side of things. This is a new experience for me with my middle ds! I love them both to pieces for very different reasons. Anyway, for those of you worried about the shine wearing off for you as you reteach a guide to another child... I'd say no worries. It's been a totally different experience every time! (Including my 3rd time through LHTH) .

Emmett with his authentic looking wheat he glued (oh how this child loves to glue!) :
He loved drawing the faces and counting them:
Emmett can't get enough of play-dough. He spent awhile on his "J" and was so proud:
Those fine motor skills are coming along. I drew dots for him today to help him out with the review a bit. He showed this one to dad right when he got home and gave a rousing rendition of singing the ABC's while pointing at his picture (stopping with shock at "J", like "where's the rest?" )
Emmett actually followed the directions for his drawing quite well. He is making real progress in this!

I love seeing Wyatt doing RTR - it makes me more and more excited for Bryce to do it next year!
I remember when Bryce briefly did Bigger last year - we did the Wampum belt. It was SO.MUCH.FUN. It was his favorite project of all and I still have the finished product. It looks a lot like the one your little Riley made.

I bet Bryce did love that wampum belt! I'm so happy he's doing so well in CTC this year. He really put his mind to it and just jumped in and took off running. Way to go Bryce! RTR is a wonderful follow-up to it. Wyatt is at an age where I feel like I need to be especially diligent about having a good relationship with him, and RTR's "Boyhood and Beyond" has really been special to us. We're enjoying all of our joint sessions for RTR, but that book is going to have a special place in my heart for years to come.

I loved the peek into your week! What a funny story about your "messing up" your little one's mind! I tend to jump in to help too, and my pondering child would rather I waited! I too am always amazed at how much my boys enjoy the poetry and how much they remember. I never had any experience with famous poetry until we began homeschooling, and it has become a joy for me to read and study poetry now too.

I loved your week in pictures. The Egyptian Palace Bread brought back wonderful memories, as my boys devoured it quickly for desert at lunch the day we made it. I barely got even a tiny piece! I like the pictures of the treasure hunt and your little one's smiling face over his math activity. It made my day!

I loved the painting of Joseph's coat and the matching colored buttons your daughter lined up for the math activity! Your son did a beautiful job on his picture to go with "A Song for A Little House". It really turned out great! We love any math activities at our house that use snacks, so I'm thinking your son enjoyed his too!

I loved the pictures of Kayla doing Little Hands to Heaven. The one with the baby doll is my favorite! It was darling to see her doing her math activity and her sink and float one for science with Noah's Ark too. I love pictures of little girls doing our guides, as I have few girly moments or girly things at my house (except for those that are my own)!

I enjoyed seeing your kiddos' work and their smiling faces. I loved the comments about Christina Georgina's name. I think it would be perfect for a baby girl too! But, alas, no baby girls on the horizon here! Your discussion on King James was such a good one! I was so surprised to learn about him too and they way God used him anyway.

I loved Wyatt's chalk cross picture. It turned out beautiful! I can also just picture Riley reading his poetry with the microphone echoing. I must admit I smile every time I see Emmett's huge smiles over his projects. Who could help but do so, when he's smiling so B-I-G! Thanks for sharing your kiddos' memorable moments this week.

Your kiddos did such a good job on their paintings. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing both of their smiling faces over a job well-done! I loved hearing about Noah's progress and the way he is growing into some of the independence in CTC. It is wonderful to see kiddo's bloom!
