History questions
History questions
My dh was asking tonight what we will be studying in history and science. He talked about taking ds to D.C. (A big trip now that we live in NH!) I thought maybe next year, my parents do live near there, so we'd have a place to stay.
We're doing Preparing so I told him we would be studying Pasteur and Da Vinci. He asks me all these history questions, I hated history as a kid , it was so boring, that's why I love these living books! DH remember so much! I told him he could add to our history.
I hadnt' worried about it, I trust HOD guides. DH doesn't get how history is introduced and then it gets repeated more in depth as you get older. I did tell him that because I think he's asking if ds knows such and such about something and I'm like "uh, we just touched on it". Like last year with studying the Civil War, dh was asking all kinds of questions that were way more in depth then we needed for 3rd grade. Like all these battles. I told you he remembered a lot. I remember very little about the history I learned, I found it so boring.
Guess I'm asking other opinions. Do you think the history follows what ps kids do fairly well? I felt like it did last year in Bigger for 3rd grade.

Re: History questions
Your husband sounds like my husband...only my dh is giving my son quadratic equations to solve a 6th grade math problem. LOL My poor dh is an engineer and he takes his math very seriously. LOL I often have to remind him that we are not homeschooling college over here...so cool it! Haha!
I absolutely adore the history in HOD and the kids are learning so much MORE than ps kids. PS kids are learning "Social Studies" right now...not real history.

Re: History questions
I'm from a huge civil war learning state.... we didn't even touch on it till 4th grade... and then we just learned mostly our state's involvement and took field trips... I think it was 8th grade before we went in depth... then again in 11th.
And I still couldn't have told you then that Gettysburg was in PA, i thought it was in GA. I have learned more history from DH, HOD, and movies
than I ever did in school. HOD taught me that the Revolutionary war was against the British

Re: History questions
If it helps, I was talking to my friends 16 year old public schooled daughter and mentioned something about Plymouth Rock and Plymouth Plantation. She had NO idea what I was talking about. None! Around here it should not only be taught, but it should be a field trip...it's only about a 2 hour drive!!! Thanks to HOD, my 7 year old knows more history than she does. A sad statement about public education.

Re: History questions
I didn't understand who fought in the civil war until I read Gone with the Wind senior year in highschool (my choice, not assigned) and I was an A student. Somehow I managed to pass those multiple choice tests.

Re: History questions
My dd1 is in PS. last year in 3rd grade they didn't study history... They do social studies it barely touches on history instead it was long lists of geography vocabulary words, government words, and the environment and how to protect it. In the course of the whole year they briefly touched on Columbus (1 day), Jamestown (1 week unit), one battle of General Washington (1 week unit), and a tiny bit of TX history (2 week unit). That was it... HOD is far more in depth and taught all the same information (excepting the environmental stuff) just uses engaging stories to tie it all up and have it make sense in context.
When I went to Boston last summer I did go more in depth with my kiddos. MY dd wanted to see where Phyllis Wheatly lived which we couldn't do. That book was read 2 years prior! She really related to the tea party, the battle of Lexington, and going and seeing Plymouth and the Mayflower II. I'm not sure how much "stuck" in her brain but it sure was fun!

Re: History questions
I think typically, since we moms are usually the ones homeschooling the dc and picking out the curriculum, our dh's just don't really understand what the kids are learning when. I have had this 'problem' with my husband as well. He also is an engineer, and our dd actually said she didn't want Daddy to explain math to her because he "says words I don't understand."
I don't know if I should feel good because she wants me to do it, or if I should feel insulted because that means I speak on her level! (honestly, math is not my strong suit, so we are learning together)
Anyway, I think it's a common occurrence, and dh probably just doesn't remember when he learned something...so is perplexed when his dc does not know it. I don't remember much from school. It was only when I went to college that I began to enjoy history and remember it! DH and I attended the same high school but obviously had different educational experiences...I personally think the HOD history (and all subjects for that matter) are much more interesting than anything you would find in a public school...with the added bonus of being from a Christian worldview.
