CTC: We've completed 3 units!

Post by tollhousemom » Tue Aug 24, 2010 3:02 pm

This is our first time using HOD. My 10yob is doing CTC. So far...it is going very well! I'm still working with him some on the "I" boxes for two reasons: 1)We're new to HOD so I am guiding him along in getting used to the directions, the activities, etc. and 2)I'm enjoying it and have the time to do it (now that I've "paid my dues" and have 2 that have graduated and 2 that are very independent in their high school studies). As the year progresses, he'll be taking on more independence.

We have really enjoyed everything so far. He particularly likes the Where in the World CDs and has been disappointed that there has been a break from them. He loves the storytime selections and we have had a great time searching through Proverbs for connections. We're both happy that projects and art (painting) are actually getting done since they are a natural part of the plans, not just an add-on. We've also had some good biblical conversations that have been sparked by history, Bible, and science especially.

I'm still trying to figure out placement for dictation and am not quite sold on it yet (hard to teach a long-time homeschooler new tricks). I also am thinking of investing in the watercolor tube paints. I think I saw someone else mentioning that the regular pan watercolors are hard to mix--we've experience it too.

If I can figure out how to post pictures, I'll be sure to share some of our HOD moments!

This is our schedule for CTC. We've been able to get everything done by 1:00 with just a couple of exceptions. He is very excited to accomplish so much and yet be done by 1:00! I actually thought of pushing lunch back to 12:30 so we could say we are done by lunch :-) but 12:00 works better for my older kids...I'd rather us all eat together and not have a starving teens revolt on my hands! LOL!

Oh, we're doing CTC 5 days per week--we have commitments during the winter/spring that require us to take time off here & there, so we're "getting ahead" now! And it is not a burden at all.

7:00 Wake, breakfast, chores
8:00am Bible Quiet Time
8:30 Reading About History
9:00 Storytime (20), History Project (20), Independent History Study (20)
10:00 Bible Study/Geography (20), Language Arts (40)
11:00 Poetry
11:30 Math
12:00 Lunch
12:30 Science
1:00 Done!

In the afternoon he practices piano and does some "free" reading.

I'm looking forward to continued good fruit both academically and spiritually as the year goes on!

Welcome to the HOD Board, and congrats on a good start to CTC! :D We were hitting our stride about 3 weeks into CTC last year too. Thanks for posting your schedule here, as that is a huge help to others doing CTC. I wonder if you could also post this on the "Let's Share Our Schedules" thread that is at the top of the Main Board? It would be neat to have this post there too, as that is a huge thread ladies scheduling their year refer to often. I can vouch for CTC being such a God-honoring, beautiful guide the entire year, as we did it last year - you have many wonderful days ahead of you. :D

tollhousemom,

I'm so glad to hear that you're settling into CTC and have already completed 3 units. :D It looks like you have a great schedule, and I'm very encouraged by the progress you're already seeing. We loved having the art and projects scheduled within CTC too, as I am not one to include those things on my own otherwise. :D My boys love Diana Waring here too, and they have learned so much about history from her. She is one fast-talking lady! We pray you continue to enjoy your HOD journey! :D

Thanks so much for sharing! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
