Need Opinions on placement
Need Opinions on placement
After viewing the placement chart I believe this would be a good fit for my son going into 1st grade. He is not an emerging reader, or spelling words. Is LHFHG extensive enough to carry us through if he does catch on quickly and begin to read etc.?

My dd(7) is in first. She is still doing phonics with The Reading Lesson and I added a page or two of Explode the Code. She is actually learning to spell a little with ETC, because they have to write the word that goes with a picture. Right now it is CVC words. Anyway, we are into our third week with LHFHG. It is is working very well with my dd. If you put your ds in the level of math and reading he needs, you can easily do LHFHG. If he isn't doing emerging readers, you can do a phonics program, or if he is done with phonics, as some have suggested, you can get 1st level library books to have him read. That is what I plan to do with dd when she is done with TRL, if I feel she is not ready for the emerging readers. There is a possibility we may finish TRL before we finish LHFHG, but I may still wait until Beyond to do the emerging readers.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. III John 4

Re: Need Opinions on placement
My ds 7 did not use LHFHG, we decided to go ahead and do Beyond....for 2nd grade. However, we do have the story time books, like Reddy Fox and Peter Cottontail, and he absolutely LOVES them. My dd 10.5 has even taken them all, one by one, and read them herself....and she enjoyed them very much too. So, even though I can't comment on the rest, I can say the story time books have been a real hit here and he always wants me to read more!

Welcome to the board!
Yes, I think LHFHG would be fine for your son. I used it last year with my son (6 yo) even though his reading was at a 2nd grade level by the end of September (we had used 100 Easy Lessons months before HOD). He read through the Emerging Readers, lots of other books and worked through Phonics Pathways for the Phonics box of the plans each day. I also used the 1st grade options for Science (Our Father's World book), Fine Motor (Thinking Skills gr 1 book) and Singapore 1A & 1B for him as the K options would have been too easy for him. He did really well and enjoyed the year.
We're in Beyond this year and I'm so glad I didn't do it last year. The copywork & spelling would have been too much for him. This year it's a perfect fit for him.

The placement chart is very accurate. If he places in LHFHG, I'd definitely go with that! This will allow you to give focus to his LA skills of reading/writing so he will be prepared for Beyond Little Hearts the following year. We loved LHFHG, and I think you will too!

Re: Need Opinions on placement
My younger son was turning 6 and starting 1st grade last year when we started Little Hearts. We had a wonderful year!
We began with phonics and then, mid-year, we switched to the emerging readers...and by the end of the year, we moved to DITHR (he really took off in reading last year! LOL). For us, Little Hearts was perfect for 1st grade.
