phonics-emerging readers
phonics-emerging readers
Hello to all. We are closing in really quickly for our start date for Beyond. I had planned for both dds to use the emerging readers however, one dd seems to be "hanging out" skill wise somewhere in between. She KNOWs the phonics rules like the back of her hand and when she stumbles and I tell her which rule to apply she almost always can figure out the word. So, has anyone completed phonics instruction with a child but still felt as if they were not quite ready for the ERs? What did you do in the meantime? Should I try the ERs and help or are they meant to be read w/o assistance? If anyone is familiar with the Pathways readers this dc is currently reading the first grade readers. TIA for any words of wisdom.

Re: phonics-emerging readers
The Early Readers Bible is quite easy, and you will be in it for quite a while on the emerging readers schedule. Would that giver her time to solidify her skills?
Meanwhile, I would keep reading lots of extra books aloud to her, especially picture books.

Re: phonics-emerging readers
The ER's set starts out easy and by the time they are reading harder books they are more than ready for them, and don't even realize it
Maybe start the one who is having more trouble with the Early Readers Bible and then go back and do the Beginners Bible.

Re: phonics-emerging readers
Thanks for the responses. I really like the idea of going through both Bibles to solidify her skills. She makes progress, just very s.l.o.w.l.y. while the other child just whips through everything. I feel like she has been an "emerging reader" forever but has just never taken off. Also, I think I'll start the stronger reader somewhere in the middle of the ERs and then move on to DITHOR. This way there really cannot be much competition because they won't be reading the same material at the same time. We do read aloud but not enough so thanks for the reminder. I know she is storing up all of those words to retrieve at a later date so read alouds are important. Thanks again.
