Dithor 4/5 - 3 days a week

Post by Busymomma1 » Sat Aug 07, 2010 7:46 am

Hi all,
For those of you who have done the DITHOR 4/5 level and have done it 3 times a week, how has that gone for you? We did 2/3 last year, and did all 9 genres. We really enjoyed that, but this year, my dd is doing Bigger plus extensions, and most likely DITHOR 4/5. What I'm really wondering is how it seemed to flow just doing it 3 days a week. Did your kids feel like it took too long to get through a book or anything like that, or did they really enjoy the slower pace? I'm a little torn as to what to do. Another year of 2/3 every day, or 4/5 - 3 days a week? I figure with all the extensions reading, doing 4/5 at the slower pace will probably be a good thing! Either way, she's reading books from the 4/5 and 5/6 packs (I think... it's been a while since I bought them!) Just wondering on frequency, combined with Bigger Extensions reading. Hope that makes sense!

Any input appreciated! Thanks!

We did DITHOR 3 days a week with Preparing because that is the way it is scheduled and it went great. My ds seemed to enjoy not having to rush through a book, of course he came from public school were they did just that and he hated it. I think his retention was better going slower. We will be finishing up the 4/5 book this year as we do CTC. I think you could easily do it 3x's a week and be fine especially with doing the extensions.

I think you'd probably be fine either way. In Bigger it's scheduled every day, and since there aren't other things scheduled for the "off" days of DITHOR like in Preparing you probably wouldn't throw off the balance of the day. But, I don't think you'd have to do it every day as making sure that you get in 3 days per week should give you sufficient literature teaching with your child, too. The goal of getting through all 9 genres every 2 years is fine (and what's scheduled in the LA box from Preparing on up). The retention on our DITHOR is great! I think that savoring them and taking time to go through them more slowly actually makes them "stick" better.

I felt like my ds was ready for that transition to 3 days after his year with daily DITHOR. :D He cherishes his time reading his special DITHOR book! It's something he really looks forward to reading because he has to wait a bit for it. We stick to the reading calendar even when he wants to read more, which I think is key. Sitting with a book for awhile is right up CM's alley! It helps dc to really take note of character and plot development, which doesn't happen when dc rush through books. With the added reading in the extensions package, you'll probably find 3 days of DITHOR to be just right. But, you could start with 3 days a week and up it to 4 or 5 after the first genre if you are thinking you'd enjoy that. DITHOR is super flexible that way. :D
