Very good school day!!!! Math question?

Post by psreit » Thu Aug 05, 2010 11:27 am

Our 4th day of school went very well!! :D DD was in a happy mood. She even asked to do the 'Rhymes in Motion' She had some frustrations with handwriting, which isn't unusual. The first day I did Bible with her in my bedroom. She has since been asking, as soon as she gets up, if we can have devotions in my room. She has always been so inquisitive with Bible stories. Also, I was so happy when we went over the memory verse. DD had been saying it is too hard and just didn't seem to trying too hard. But, after reading the visual I made of Matthew 19:14, dd flipped it over and recited it from memory. :D She only needed a prompt maybe twice. So, I guess she is listening more than she lets on. It helps to do things in different areas in the house. When we would change rooms, she would want me to go to that room and ring a bell for her to come. :) She thrives in pretend play. She even acted like we were in a cafeteria (in a college) when we ate breakfast. :) Her siblings had been in college, so she likes to model them. She did listen more attentively to Reddy Fox today and was disappointed we weren't doing the next chapter to see what happens to Reddy because he got in the hen house. :) I know we will have some rough days, but I think we are moving forward. :D

I just have a question about a concept in Math that dd just doesn't seem to be getting. I have the Earlybird K, 2A and 2B books for her, even though she is 1st grade. I am moving through the A book ahead of the LHFHG schedule, because some of it dd already knows. I wanted to fill the gaps. The concept of how many 'more than' and 'less than' is not coming. If I put a group of 4 and a group of 3 before her and ask how many more are in this group, she will say 4. :? Even when I pair them up and she can tell me how many are left over, she still doesn't seem to be computing that there is 'one more' or 'one less'. Should I just be patient and keep trying the activities in the guide, or is there another way that someone found that worked? Maybe that is one of those things that will just 'click'.

Edit: I moved on in math. We practically skipped over some pages of things that dd knows. I don't want to hold her back because of that one concept. I will just go over it now and then and hope she 'gets it'.

Your little one is making good progress - way to go sweetie! :D I agree with the conclusion you came to about moving on at, and I wouldn't skip activities as the concepts build upon one another. I think you have a super idea to fill any gaps before hopping ahead too quickly - you'll be glad you were thorough for years to come. One thing that helped my dc get the more and less concept was to do it with treats. I'd get out 5 pieces for me, and 2 for them and say "This is fair right?!?" :D They usually argue the fairness of it rather quickly and figure out how many more they need for it to be fair. Then, when doing math problems I can remind them of the unfair treat activity and have them do it with counters instead. This was an HOD hands-on idea that I used with treats. HTH! :D

Thanks, Julie. I will try the treats. DD loves her sweets. :) Maybe that will do the trick. I am looking forward to our second week with LHFHG. DD was excited that her memory verse this week is one that she has already memorized. :D Hopefully it will be put into practice  One of these days I will post a picture.
