TRL

Post by GinainMD » Thu Aug 05, 2010 11:51 am

Hello everyone! I'm using the reading lesson with dd3 and I'm curious as to what to do after this. The foreward in the book says that when a child completes TRL, they will be reading at a second grade level. So what do I do next other than have her read read read? I used Noah Websters Blue Backed Speller for dd1 and dd2 is a self taught reader so I really have no ex. with a reading program like this. Any advice would be helpful.

Hi! Some dc can go right into the emerging readers set, while others would do better reading level 1 readers from the library for awhile. While my ds could read the words for the Early Readers Bible, he was intimidated by the smaller print, so we've been experimenting with the various readers available at our library for a couple of months, and now he's reading the ER Bible easily. HTH :)

I'm wondering about this, too. I know that HOD is set up for them to move into the Emergent Readers Set, but what I'm not sure about is how that teaches them the rest of what isn't in TRL. I don't know how to ask the question so have been avoiding posting about it. I am trying the TRL w/ my almost 5 yo who was already reading CVC words. I like it, but I'm nervous about whether it will be enough. I know some here use the Explode the Code workbooks, too. Not sure if I want to go that route or not.

I have used Phonics Pathways with my DS in the past. We put it aside for now because TRL covers the same things that the first 2/3 of PP covers, only there are fewer word lists and it's more fun for him. But TRL goes up to a 2nd grade reading level, and PP goes up to 4th. Depending on how quickly DS finishes TRL, we may pick up the last 1/3 of PP to give him an extra boost. I'm even moreso concerned with this with my 4 yo who is in the same boat as your DD. Depending on when she finishes TRL, she may be way too young for the emerging readers (if we want to stay on track with HOD, that is.) So I will do the same plan with her. HTH!
