extension packages

Post by wow8kids » Mon Aug 02, 2010 12:16 pm

If I am using a guide for only the extension age range, do I also need a basic package? This seems like a LOT of books for even an older child.
Thanks!

bumping this, because I've noticed a lot of people looking, but not answering. Hoping someone knows! Surely I'm not the first to do this. :0)

The way I read it, it says that the extension package would replace the basic package for older students. I could be wrong but that is my take on it.
Adding this optional package to the Economy Package extends the area of history to include more advanced, independent reading material.
I think that the content is similar, just on a more advanced level.
we recommend the Basic Package in place of the Extension Package.
This leads me to believe they are interchangeable.

Depends on which guide you are getting extensions for. Up until Preparing, the extension packages are in addition to the other packages. In CTC and RTR they would replace the "basic package" read-alouds. It is a lot of books, but that is a good thing :) Carrie has done such a great job of scheduling the readings, it has never seemed like too much. Small portions savored over a period of time :)

Thanks for the clarification. I had thought the same thing - that it would be in place of the basic package, but something (and now I can't remember what) lead me to believe that might be wrong. Now I see that it could be because I'll be using Bigger and CTC, but for RTR I'll only be using the extension. I hope that's right! I'm ordering in the next few days.

There is some leeway here once you get to the older guides, especially RTR. Some choose to do both the basic package and the extension package with their older dc, and some may just choose one or the other. I think it depends on the student, and if they are totally inspired by more books, or if more books just stresses them out. I also think it depends on how many dc mom is schooling and if mom is doing another Storytime, which is the Basic Package, with another HOD guide. In RTR, the guide suggests the Storytime may be read by either the parent or the child. That may make a difference in what you choose as well. HTH as you consider your family! :D
