Beyond poetry copywork

Post by my2guys » Sat Jul 31, 2010 9:20 pm

For those of you who have done Beyond already - did your kiddos copy the entire poem every week? Some of them are quite lengthy and I can already hear ds whining about how it's going to take hours to copy.  So I'm just wondering how it worked for others...

We decided not to do Beyond this year, but we did try it out before coming to that decision. My intention was to have him copy one line at a time for a while and build up from there. HTH!

My daughter did Beyond last year. She usually copied only one stanza of the poem; at least 4 lines. I helped her choose a part that was meaningful to her and would also be easy to illustrate on day 5. I hope that helps. :)

just do what works for him! I know my boys couldn't have done the entire poem at age 6 without my dragging them through it. My second son will just turn 7 this week and I am only having him do part and we'll build throughout the year. I do expect my 9 yo to copy all of it.

Funny.. we are doing first day of Beyond with my son today. He looks at the poem and says "Mom, i'll tell you how much I am going to copy" He then proceeded to tell me he would copy the first 3 lines. He says " Because that is about how much you make me copy at a time". I almost laughed out loud.
It is so awesome to see him take responsibility for his work.

We started the first Unit of Beyond last week and my son (7) has done the first five lines so far (including the title...I don't expect he'll copy the entire poem...probably just through the first two stanzas. I'm having him do 2-3 lines a day....just base it on what you think your dc can handle and work up to doing more throughout the year. That's what I did with my daughter, and by the end of the year she was able to copy the entire poem each week. HTH

Beyond suggests just letting dc copy what they are able to copy, and for my ds that was 1 line a day at the beginning of the year. By the end of the year, we divided the poem out so he had copied it all in 4 days and drew a picture to illustrate it on the fifth day. :D

I am also having my son illustrate the poem each week, something I didn't think of doing with my daughter. He seemed to enjoy it, and I believe it helped him remember parts of the poem. Actually, we had a storm here yesterday and and he even mentioned how the "thunder is growling" which is part of the poem from Unit 1. Anyway, we just started and we're really enjoying everything...I'm so glad he gets to go through Beyond...just as my daughter did!

Currently-we are reading the poem ,memorising some parts and decorating but not doing copywork. There is nothing wrong withcopywork-Im just taking full advantage of being in aposition to provide a tailor made curriculum .My child struggles with handwriting, sequencing and we are using Getty handwriting book B.This will probably change throughout theyear as my child develops and matures
