Kids with Fine Motor Issues & Copywork
I have a son who is about to turn 7. He has fine motor issues due to a genetic syndrome. He will be starting Bigger with this older sister. I have been hesitating to have him do copywork at all because of how difficult it is for him. How can I make it something he can feel successful at without making it seem "babyish"?
His handwriting looks a lot like a beginning Kindergartener.

Re: Kids with Fine Motor Issues & Copywork
I haven't started HOD with my son that has son that continues to have fine motor issues. For his handwriting program that I am using now, I have do split the copywork and take two days to complete it. That way he doesn't get tired or frustrated.
Re: Kids with Fine Motor Issues & Copywork
My dd(7) has some fine motor issues. She had a mild CP. She has always struggled with handwriting. She continues to receive O.T. where Handwriting Without Tears has been used to teach letter formation and now practice. DD will be doing LHFHG this year. I was going to use Beyond, but after finding out more about the different levels, I thought we should take a gentler approach to begin HOD. I think the jump from Beyond to Bigger would be too much next year, so I took a step back. I think Little Hearts will work great for her. Anyway, I am just using HWT 1st grade for her to practice writing. She's in 1st grade. I don't think that is babyish. I realize that LHFHG calls for a handwriting program. But given the age of your ds, maybe you could consider a formal handwriting program to do with Bigger if doing the copywork is too difficult. Just a thought.

Re: Kids with Fine Motor Issues & Copywork
I noticed in your signature that you have an almost 5 yo too, doing LHFHG half-speed. Since your ds is 6 yo (albeit almost 7 yo) and the earliest age suggested to begin Bigger Hearts is 7 yo, I wonder if your ds could work with his younger sister in LHFHG instead? I can see that it makes total sense to combine him with one of his siblings, as he is close in age to several. I just think it may be easier now and in the future if he was combined with his younger sister rather than his older, as this part of the placement chart in regard to Bigger Hearts has me concerned for him:
Writing: Mastered formation of manuscript letters; able to copy passages; can compose original sentences; ready to begin simple dictation; ready to begin cursive writing
Have he and his older sister done Beyond yet? If not, that may be an easier way to combine. If they have, and you feel Bigger Hearts is the better placement for him rather than doing LHFHG with youngers sis, maybe you could start Bigger Hearts half-speed with the older two? He could then do copywork every day, but just a line each day or so, and then do the rest of the guide half-speed. These are just a few thoughts I had, but I'd love to hear what you think about all of this and continue kicking around some ideas!

Re: Kids with Fine Motor Issues & Copywork
When copywork was too much for my ds, I would write a line or two(at the time it was of a Bible verse, but it could be anything) in a highlighter and have him trace it - making sure to start his letter at the top(like HWT recommends). Later on in the year, he copied the verse he had highlighted the next day. HTH!

Re: Kids with Fine Motor Issues & Copywork
How about putting some of his copywork into startwrite and letting him trace it. This was a big help for my dd with CP. I think she is really right handed but due to CP has been forced to be left handed. I put verses from HOD and copywork in the trace mode and let her do it that way for a while. Just a thought.

Re: Kids with Fine Motor Issues & Copywork
I just remembered this past post I'd posted when my ds was having difficulty learning to write on lines. Maybe something here could help too!
Pics of progression of writing:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5605&p=41147#p41147
I got to thinking that your ds could also wait to do cursive until the following year, and he could just copy as much of the poetry as he was able - maybe a line or two a day to start. Also, he could just do 1 vocabulary card, and he could do most of R & S English orally. HTH - I'd love to hear your thoughts when you get chance.
In Christ,
Julie

Re: Kids with Fine Motor Issues & Copywork
Thanks Julie and others. My son (with the f/m issues) and his older sister have already completed LHFHG and BLHFHG, so the next place to go is Bigger. I was even thinking of half pacing it for him/them.
Julie,
He really notices when I make things different for him and his older sister. I try to explain to him that she IS a FULL 13 months older than him! I don't explain to him that she is leaps and bounds ahead of him developmentally. I feel that I am holding HER back for HIS sake. I even find myself separating the 2 of them for copywork and other things when I could be combining them so that one doesn't know what the other is doing...thus making it harder on me.
I would love your suggestions. At some point, he is going to have to realize that he is going to struggle with things that his sister doesn't. Maybe I am protecting him too much...

One thing that may help is to make clear your expectations before beginning an activity. For example, you may let your 6 yo know that for that age only a line of copywork should be done each day - you can word it that way as fact - rather than letting him stop when he gets fatigued and risking the chance of him feeling like he somehow failed. You may let your 7 yo know that for that age, 2 lines a day should be done (or whatever you want). You can also make clear that for a 5 yo, no copywork is required, so your ds sees the difference in expectations.

I do not believe you are protecting him too much. I respect you for caring so much about him in this way, in fact. I think of our sons as being each other's best friends, and as such, they need to learn how to be good friends and how to allot for differences not only in ages, but also in talents the Lord has given. I have explained to my oldest that God gave our middle ds the talent of working with small tools and putting small things together, whereas God gave my oldest the talent of working with larger things using his whole body. For example, my oldest cannot put together erector sets like my middle ds can, but my oldest can care for an entire yard and garden while my middle ds can't. Their differences aren't bad, they''re intended by God for a purpose. How sad would it be if the whole world was talented at the same things! We've also talked about how talents aren't all or nothing; you can be average at something and still enjoy it. I like to cook, but I'm no Julia Child, for example. Also, sometimes we're not as good at something because we are just not that interested in it. For example, Riley loves to work on his 3 wheeler and ride it, and Wyatt just doesn't enjoy it that much, therefore he doesn't do it as much, and no surprise - he's not as good at it. Likewise, Wyatt loves organizational projects, like organizing and labeling all of our free reading books, while Riley doesn't enjoy it and therefore doesn't ever really learn how to go about doing it in an orderly fashion. I think it helps my kids if I give them lots of personal examples from my life if I can. For example, I've explained that both Carrie and I like to write, but she likes writing plans, and I like writing creatively. That doesn't mean she can't write creatively or I can't write plans, it just means neither one of us want to spend time doing the kind of writing we don't like as well, and God gave us different interests and talents. That's why I love Carrie writing the HOD guides, and I enjoy writing the HOD catalog!

Anyway, I'm sure this is more than you were wanting, but I think it does sound like the 2 of them will do fine half-speed Bigger Hearts. You can let them know you'd like both of them to be more in the middle age range of the guides, and that's why you're taking it slowly (at least to start with). Your oldest will be challenged enough in Bigger half-speed (you can always go full-speed partway in if it seems best for both), and in PHFHG you can consider adding the extension if you really feel it's necessary for your dd at that point.

In Christ,
Julie

Re: Kids with Fine Motor Issues & Copywork
Hi Shannon-it sounds like you have a dilligent little boy.
Nathan -my 7 yo has and ASC-and whilst his drawing is excellent- his writing is below that you could expect for his age and he struggles. He struggles to sequence the words and struggles to maintain the muscle control .Right now we are doing Beyond, but I dont ask him to do the copywork.Someday I feel badly about that-as though I am failing to properly train my son, somedays I am better at recognising that I am homeschooling to give my child the individual education he needs.[FTR My child does write out the bible verse each week to give someoene and because he was taught cursive from 4
ay PS-we have ordered Getty book 2 for handwriting].So my advice was similar to Julies- dont be afraid to tinker with the guide-

Re: Kids with Fine Motor Issues & Copywork
Thanks, Sam.
I am in the process of Reading Terri Maxwell's Book "Homeschooling With A Meek and Quiet Spirit". It is SO hitting me where I need it! I really need to remember that I am Homeschooling because (like you said in your post) I want to educate my individual children. This book is reminding me that I want to grow my children to be what God has made them to be...not what some public school standard says they should be. So, I need to quiet my spirit about that
