RE: Using R&S English 3 w/ BHFHG

Post by marypoppins » Mon Mar 10, 2008 7:47 am

Hi Carrie,

I was going to e-mail this question to you directly, but thought maybe there would be other moms wondering the same thing so I posted here instead.

I will be using BHFHG with my third grade ds next year with R&S 3rd grade English. I realize that R&S English 2 is scheduled directly in the BHFHG manual, and also that R&S 3 will be scheduled in the Preparing manual. But I'm wondering, is there a way that at some point it would be possible to get a schedule for R&S 3 to use with BHFHG, kind of like the way that you made the Singapore 3A/3B schedule available in the BHFHG appendix?

Thanks for your consideration! :D

Hi-basically, the Rod and Staff 2 is scheduled 1 lesson per day, skipping the "Extra Activity" at the end of each unit. So, I think you could simply write in the page numbers for each lesson in Rod and Staff 3 into the Language Arts box of your Bigger manual's daily lessons.

Lourdes is so right! The schedule for Rod and Staff English 2 is just at a 1 lesson per day pace. So, scheduling Rod and Staff 3 would be just as easy. If the schedule for Rod and Staff 3 and 4 were going to be in the Appendix of "Preparing...", I could easily just email you a copy of those pages, but we are putting the schedule for those in the daily plans making it not easy to email you a schedule!

So, I'd just write in the page numbers in your "Bigger..." guide as Lourdes suggested.

The Singapore Math on the other hand, is something quite different to schedule to equal out a year (and to match textbook and workbooks pages). That one takes a bit more doing! So, if you're using Singapore, you'd want the schedule for that!

Blessings,
Carrie

are you still going with R&S 3 with Bigger? I am finishing up with First Language Lessons Vol.2 and will be using vol. 3 when we start Bigger. My 8 year old will be a '3rd grader'

Hi MamaBear :D

If you're asking what is actually scheduled in the Bigger manual, it's R&S 2. I haven't used FLL, so I'm not sure how that plays into you question. There are much more knowledgeable moms than me on this board, so feel free to clarify your question if I didn't answer it. :D

I'm planning to use Bigger with my 8 y/o ds this fall, too. :D We're anticiating the fun!!

I just was asking if she was still using a 3rd grade english like me. I was going to use R&S 3 but then FLL3 came out. Basically curious to see if anyone else is using a higher english than in Bigger.

I am going to be using third grade English with Bigger.
My son will be using either FLL 3 or Rod and Staff 3.
You are not alone!

I'll be using R&S 3 as well. We are using Bigger..with my 8 yo and my 10 yo. I'm going to have to go through the book and write out the schedule for level 3. But, it probably won't be that difficult...I would expect just counting the pages, and the days in your year, then assigning pages according to that, right? :? Maybe if I get it done I'll share it...it could be a while!

Also, ladies, you could just schedule to do Rod and Staff how ever many deys you want each week and just go lesson to lesson (knowing that it may take more than a year to get through that level of Rod and Staff).

We did that with English 4, as I feel Rod and Staff is quite advanced. My son and I did it 3-4 days a week, taking a year and a half to finish. We just did the next lesson in that fashion. Just another option. :D

Level 6 of Rod and Staff is quite enough English before high school, in our opinion. Rod and Staff 7 and 8 are VERY writing based and quite technical (but still very solid). So, we're not planning on having to finish those prior to high school with our oldest son at this point.

Blessings,
Carrie
