LHTH for Kindergarten?

Post by Tabitha » Sun Jun 20, 2010 3:47 pm

How many have used LHTH for Kindergarten?

I bought this set 2 years ago. My youngest will be 5 in August. When she was 3, she was not ready for this. I tried it again at the beginning of this past school year, and it didn't last a week. It's either again that she wasn't ready for it, or not that into it. I don't know. She didn't want to do the poems and movements. Toward the end of this school year though, she got really into working in a big bible workbook we had doing her dot to dots, copying the letters/numbers/words, etc. After a month she didn't want to do that anymore and wants big girl school work.

My question is should I try doing LHTH again with her, and use the A Reason for Writing K and SM for K? Or, should I just try LHFHG using the K materials?

I do feel she won't have the attention span for all of the reading in LHFHG. I think that was part of her problem before with LHTH, but perhaps now being a little older she'll sit still longer for that. With LHFHG, though, I can't see her sitting through the CLP history reads.

Just looking to see what others have done with a child who seems to be inbetween with attention and ability.

I haven't done this, but I think it's a great idea to use LHTH for Kinder using the LHFHG right side (math, phonics, and handwriting, but saving storytime for when you actually get to LHFHG). Right now I'm using LHTH with my 4 1/2 year old son, but plan to take it over two years, so sometime we'll add in the LHFHG right side options. He is the same is your dd, just not quite ready for the formal school yet.

Hi there,

Yes, I think it is a very good idea to start with Little hands! All the best with your little girl!

I will say that my daughter doesn't really like the music and movement or fingerplays, especially ones that didn't go with a song. Some kids might just not be that into that particular thing, so that wouldn't bother me.

However, I think to do LHFHG, they need to be able to listen to things being read aloud. Even the Burgess books--though very fun, and even edge of the seat type reading at times--definitely require sit-and-listen ability. If you're hoping to do the right-side of LHFHG, including storytime, I would suggest getting another Burgess book and try reading it to her this summer, one chapter per day. If that is too much, then I would do LHTH plus the right side of LHFHG with K options. Next year, you could do LHFHG with 1st grade options.

We are using LHTH for K this year.... we are using the right side of LHFHG (minus storytime) with the K options and will add in storytime and 1st grade options when we get to LHFHG left side.

The best thing about doing it this way for us is that it puts DD2 two years behind DD1 instead of doing guides back to back AND it has her older in the age range for the guides as opposed to younger.

We'll be using LHTH this fall for K along with Math U See Primer, and the other options from the right side of LHFHG. I know my son isn't ready for the history readings yet. I'd rather have him enjoying an introduction to school rather than making it too tough and having him resenting being read to. :D

I do think that LHTH is just fine for Kindergarten, and you can always add the right side of LHFHG if you need to up the LA and Math as a pp wisely said. :D I also wouldn't worry if she doesn't just love every part of it. Each box takes only a few minutes or at the most 5 minutes, so just doing it once and clipping along should work fine. :) It is rare for all dc to enjoy each part of school, even though we as parents so want them to love it all. I look at the areas a particular child may not love as much as an area to clip along in but still to do, as it often is a skill they are not that good at, or if it's a skill they don't take to as much as the others - I figure it's excellent preparation for diligence and perseverance in future jobs. :D We're on our 3rd time through LHTH with our ds, and it's still a blast! Have fun with it - and then in a year, your dd should be ready for the increased time of school in LHFHG! :D

I think you could use it for Kindergarten and just either add some Kindergarten math, phonics or used the right side of LHFHG with the rest of LHTH. Especially being such a late 5 for Kindergarten it seems like it might work.
I might add that we stretched our LHFHG with our son who had an October b-day and was ready for something at 5 yr but not all of it. we did right side of LHFHG and didn't do the history part til the next year. We had already done LHTH by itself the previous year.

Thanks everyone. I totally didn't think of doing LHTH with adding in the right side of LHFHG. I think that will be perfect for her. Now to dig out my LHFHG manual and see what all I need.

Also, as one poster mentioned, I feared putting her in LHFHG because she would be in the very young end of all the guides. Doing it this way, and then doing LHFHG a second time with 1st grade options the following year totally gets her where I'd want her to be.

I will try the Burgess books with her this summer. Infact, I'll do it with my 8yo sitting along side us. She wasn't attentive enough 2 years ago for these and it got frustrating quickly so we put them aside. Now she is ready and can even share in some of the reading if she'd like.

Thanks so much ladies!
