Teaching Worldview - Carrie's Thoughts?

Post by homeforhim » Thu Jun 17, 2010 11:59 am

Hi All,

I have been thinking about teaching worldview in the coming years and wonder what Carrie's thoughts are on this. Would she recommend a formal program and at what grade? Lightbearers is for junior high and Understanding the Times and Starting Points are for high school but what approach does she plan to take with her eldest? Will bible study expand to include worldview in the later guides?

Blessings,
Rachael

I'm not Carrie, but here are my thougths on Worldview. In the end, it is really something that we have to live out everyday, not one or two classes that we teach our children. However, many of us are fighting the worldview we were given as we grew up which is filled with secular humanism and lukewarm Christian beliefs. If we, as the parents, don't have a rock-solid Christian worldview, then we can't possibly pass one down to our children.

For us, this means my husband and I learning a lot for ourselves. Allowing old thought patterns to die away and immersing ourself in the real truths of Christianity. Personally, we both have LOVED "Understanding the Times". I highly reccomend this resource for parents and older children. I think parents should go through it themselves first, if at all possible. But if the teen years are breathing down your neck, I still think it would be excellent to do WITH your teens.

We use a lot of supplemental resources from Answers in Genesis, but we really don't consder this as part of our 'curriculum', its just another part of our lives.

I do think HOD goes a long way with teaching children to think Biblically. We've only used Preparing and LHTH, but I'm so excited to see how it will impact my little ones (who will grow up on HOD.)

Rachael,

Motherjoy gave a terrific response that is SO true! :D We are looking at using the very resources you mentioned for high school, however for the younger years we are also pondering the first book in Apologia's new series of books on worldview or a booklet on worldview from Brimwood Press. :D We are hoping to incorporate a resource focused specifically on worldview in one of our guides prior to high school, if we can find the right fit. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Thank you, Motherjoy and Carrie for your replies! I agree it has to be lived but I want to make sure I discuss certain things that are so crucial in a post-modern world :D . I am looking forward to reading UTT for myself, too, Motherjoy! I am really excited that Carrie is thinking of incorporating a resource for worldview into one of the later guides before high school and we have the wonderful benefit of hearing what she uses with her high schooler and how that goes :D ! Thank you again,

Blessings,
Rachael
