R & S 4 with Preparing and CTC

Post by Shawneinfl » Mon Jun 07, 2010 6:13 am

I understand that Rod & Staff is done half pace in CtC. My plan is to start R&S 4th with my 10 yo now with Preparing. I don't have the manual yet so I don't know if it is done half pace or full pace. Then next year do I move him right into 5 at half pace? I'm a little confused on this.

Thanks

I would follow the schedule in Preparing and do R&S 4 this year in Preparing and complete it. Then when you move to CTC and RTR, you'd take those 2 years to complete level 5 as scheduled. (I think this would be the least work for you since it's already scheduled. :D And, there are other things planned in the LA box so you'd keep the balance that's already there.) After this the next HOD guide will have the next level of R&S planned at "full-pace" to complete it in a year.

Yes! Kathleen gave you great advice. :D The amount of writing instruction is less in Preparing Hearts than it is in CTC, allowing for more time for grammar instruction at the Preparing Hearts level. It would work well to do Rod and Staff 4 at full-speed as scheduled within the Preparing guide. Then, you could head into CTC, doing Rod and Staff 5 at half-speed, when the amount of writing instruction steps up! :D

Carrie

Well, to tag on to the previous response - I am new to HOD, and planning to do CTC this fall with my 4th grade son and 5th grade daughter. My plan is to do R&S 4 with ds at whatever pace it's scheduled, and R&S 5 with dd at whatever pace it's scheduled. Will that put ds behind in the future? Thanks.

Here's a link where Carrie explains the reason for the pacing of R & S:

Your ds would probably do half-speed 4 in fourth grade, half-speed 4 in fifth grade, half-speed 5 in sixth grade, half-speed 5 in seventh grade, and full-speed 6 in eighth grade. HTH! :D

Sorry! I didn't mean to be confusing. I was just thinking through Shawne's situation, but it sounds like your situation is different from hers. :D Both English 4 and 5 are scheduled at half-speed in CTC (with the other half being completed in RTR). We typically encourage families to plan to complete Rod and Staff 6 by the end of grade 8 in preparation for high school. So, as long as you end there, you will be prepared. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
