Books to read with TRL

Post by psreit » Thu Jun 03, 2010 6:52 pm

My dd id going to be working on TRL over the summer. I'm not sure how long it will take, since she is doing some reading since being in K. However, I don't feel she is ready for the emerging readers, but she is showing interest in reading real books, not just TRL. Does anyone have suggestions of books she could try to read along with TRL until she is ready for the emerging readers?

We've been using the My First I Can Read books that you can get from the library. My son really enjoys them and only occasionally needs help with some of the words. May be worth a try.

We loved the Biscuit books (really early readers-I Can Read) and Sam books (Kids Can Read level one book). We found these at the library and purchased a few too. Then we got some nice early readers at the Christian book store, Howie and Barnabas books (My first I Can Read). There are more in each of the I Can Read series, increasing in difficulty with each level. It was a nice way for us to start.

For books that are sort of "in between" the basic "Bob-type" books and the Emerging Readers type books, I have found the Step Into Reading Step 1 Books to be a great fit. My daughter is reading but, isn't quite ready for the Emerging Readers books just yet. She's close but, gets frustrated with the Step 2 books at this point.
Some particular favorites are Jack and Jill and Big Dog Bill, I like Bugs, Big Egg, and Dragon Egg.

Thanks for all the replies. That helps to know what to look for in the library. I pick up dd at school in 1 and 1/2 hours. It's her last day! I will then feel like an official HOD'er :D It's great!! I can't wait to get started :D
