Upper level R&S English?

Post by momofgreatones » Mon May 31, 2010 11:10 am

I want to begin my almost 15 yo dd with R&S English. She is doing CTC right now. Does anyone have any experience with the upper levels of R&S English? I see that HOD carries up to level 6. Would this be advanced enough for her age? Anyone know of any placement testing for this? I think I heard once that up to level 6 it is primarily grammar, and from levels 7 and up R&S focuses mainly on writing. My dd needs more grammar at this point so I was thinking of starting her with R&S 6.

Any info appreciated!

Thanks!
Monique

You can see samples of the upper grades at (link removed per board rules) but we just finished R&S 6 this year and if your dd has not had a lot of formal grammar instruction, 6 would be a great place to start. I can't imagine 7 or 8 being much different, just harder sentence structures, which if your dd hadn't had a lot of grammar training, would just be a frustration. R&S 6 would give her a great foundation.
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

Monique,

Depending on how much grammar instruction your daughter has already had, you could do either Rod and Staff 5 or 6. Rod and Staff 7 and 8 do move more toward teaching various forms of writing, although a good bit of grammar instruction is still included. If your daughter has already had a solid foundation in the parts of speech and in diagramming, then I would begin in level 6. If your daughter has not had much formal grammar and is fuzzy on diagramming, then I'd begin in Level 5. Level 5 is typically considered to be the all-in-one foundational year of Rod and Staff, but the grammar content is reviewed well in 6. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
