Teaching elementary and high school suggestions please

Post by KimS » Thu May 27, 2010 5:42 am

I will have two in high school this year and one starting K. Does anyone have any tips on how/when they teach the HOD?
This year I will have to be more involved in the teaching of my high schoolers just because of some of the curriculum I chose.
I am thinking it would be best if I do the HOD first thing in the morning to get it out of the way. My high schoolers could work on their independent stuff then. Then the little ones could play while I do the teaching I need for the high schoolers. Only thing with that is once my high schoolers are off working independent it is hard to pull them back. :?

So any/all thoughts and suggestions would be welcome please.

For this past school year we did HOD in the morning and it worked really well. My ds & dd were alert. Towards the end of the school year we had to begin doing it in the afternoons while my youngest napped (she gave up her AM nap  ) and I found it to be more of a struggle to get them to focus. It could just be my kids though?! :)

Kim,

This scheduling thread may be of some help to you as you ponder: :D

We'll have our own high schooler this upcoming year (as well as a 6th grader, 2nd grader, and 4 year old) and will be posting our schedule in the fall (after we give it a good trial run). :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Are you using any HOD for your high schoolers? We have an 8th grader this year, and I'm trying to figure out if we can use CTC (and the following HOD years to come), for 8th-12th grade? Just curious if you are incorporating and HOD for your high schoolers? Thanks!

Hi Kim (and Heather4Him too)! :D Here is a past thread about beefing up CTC for high school:

I don't have a high schooler, but we did do 3 HOD programs last year. For me, working with the younger ones first seemed to go well. My oldest liked to start of independently. My teaching time with CTC was around an hour or an hour and a half. Not hard to get in! :D My Beyond Little Hearts time was around 2 hours, and my LHTH time was around 30 minutes. Here's a link to my schedule last year in case anything within it could be helpful:
