LHTH supply list

Post by christina101902 » Tue May 25, 2010 9:22 am

Please assume I have zero art supplies and craft supplies, what are items I can find at the nearest grocery store or walmart for my supplies needed for LHTH? I read the archived post , but no one gave any type of list. With five kids aged from 4 months to 4 years I have my hands full and need any helpful advice you can give as to bulk items I can use for the 3 and 4 year old doing LHTH.

Thank You,

Christina

DH is actually doing LHTH with our youngest, so my list might not be complete, but you will want a pencils, crayon set, scissors, glue, construction paper, and scrap paper. I can't think of much else that we have used for Little Hands. Maybe someone else can add something I forgot.

I'm interested if there's anything out of the ordinary. I have construction paper, water colors, scissors, crayons. I don't have markers, playdoh, tape or glue.... messy. If I need these, I will happily give way to the mess. :)

There is a masking tape letter each week so you need LOTS of masking tape. My youngest would pull it up faster than we could put it down so I learned to wait until nap time for that one. :) You could also do sidewalk chalk instead some times.

There was an altar or something you build out of playdough. I didn't have any dry laundry detergent so that one was a surprise to me. The plans only needed it once to make "soap". There are lots of collage pages in the beginning and end to make from magazines. I didn't have very many so that was something I had to look around for.

Also try to do the copies ahead of time. I didn't realize I needed to copy anything until I started and didn't have easy access to a copier then so it was a pain to figure that out a little late.

I usually played the music when they were sitting for worksheets or drawing. Unless the song was pretty upbeat, they didn't care to move around to it so it became background music for us most of the time.

Wow, good to know, Shimmer. Playdoh, tape, glue, powder soap. Thank you for letting me know about the copies. I don't have access to a copy machine on a regular basis either. I will have to make the copies before we get started. Thank you!

What countrymom said :D

*Washable* white glue...you can control how much the tip is open  No glue sticks yet...they just can't use them gently enough, and they don't work for activities like gluing beans onto a picture, etc.
The washable crayola crayons...they cost more and break a bit more easily, but can be cleaned off so much more easily when marks go astray...

I personally like the glue sticks over the Elmer's glue. I keep both on hand though because one sometimes works better than the other for different projects.

Did anyone say water colors? I'm pretty sure we used them. I think yarn was needed a couple of times. Coffee filters or paper towels. I think we used foil for something but I could be wrong. I think there were also paper plates used, but can't remember if that was for LHTH or LHFHG. I don't usually keep paper products in the house so the paper towels, coffee filters, paper plates, etc were big things for me. Beans, glitter, sequins, stickers, etc to put on the letters each week.

cotton balls or cheerios

Oh, and something I did with the collages was to print out clipart for each student, instead of looking in magazines. I made all my copies at the beginning of the year, and organized everything into a folder for each week. I had three students doing LHTH, so I needed to be prepared. :) All of that took less than an hour at the copy store and twenty minutes at home...easy peasy.

First of all, I want to say that there were times we didn't have the exact item written in the guide- but it was SUPER EASY to find something that worked just as well!! :D For example- we ran out of Cheerios- so we used beads instead, or if we didn't have dried beans or raisins- we used popcorn or cotton balls, etc. Also, there are almost always a # of different items you could use written right in the guide! I'm so thankful HOD makes it soooo easy on us moms! :D :D :D
Here is a list of things we used- a lot of things were interchangeable, & you really don't need ALL of it (I'll try to put everything I can think of, as we are just finishing LHTH this week)...
white paper/copy paper
construction paper (all colors)
crayons (we like Crayola- washable)
paint (tempera & fingerpaint & watercolors) & paint brushes
markers (washable) & a good permanent marker for mom
highlighter (if you want- my girls loved having their own)
scissors
o-cereal/dried beans/dried macaroni/dried spaghetti
stickers/stamps
marshmallows
tooth picks
yarn, ribbon
cotton balls
tin foil, waxed paper
magazines/catalogs/newspaper ads
glue (Elmer's & glue sticks)
soap (bar, liquid & powder detergent)
cooking oil/ chocolate syrup/ pudding/baby food
salt/ coffee grounds/ any spice
glitter
cotton swabs
clear container with lid
masking tape (LOTS) & clear tape too
sidewalk chalk
markers & marker boards
index cards
sticky notes
food coloring
napkin/ coffee filter/ paper towel
peanut butter, crackers & other snack items
bean bags or rolled up socks
popcorn/ seeds/rice/oatmeal/cornmeal
playdough
Also, a lot of toys were used for dramatic play, letter activities, etc. (toy cars, dolls/stuffed animals, blocks)- again all things you most likely have on hand or can find something to work just as well without even needing to plan ahead.
That's everything I can think of . Enjoy! You are going to love LHTH!! :D :D

Great idea! We don't really have magazines, but clip art is a great idea. I like 30 minutes from the local copy store, so I would have to be organized for at least a few weeks ahead of time, maybe even the whole year.

Jessica,

You are amazing! This needs to be moved to the LHTH board. I'm going to cut and past this post to my desktop to take to the printer when I make all my copies! Thank you!

That's a good list, but I didn't have or use all of that stuff. I'm a great adapter (and as one other poster said there are actually a lot of adaptations written right into the guide). So, I did not use play dough (though we do have it), glitter, cotton swabs, marshmallows and toothpicks (we skipped that activity sorry), crackers and peanut butter, etc. We also did not have all the different kinds of paint. I bought tempera paint at the beginning because one of the first activities used it and used it maybe twice. I think I could have done without it.

So... if you are really organized and prepared you can buy all that stuff, but I wouldn't bother personally. Also I would just go to the place and copy out all the pages at once and then keep them in a file. We have a scanner/printer at home so I could copy as I went along, but if I had to go copy somewhere I would just copy them all. And like 60 copies of "Count On Me" since you use that one every week.

There are some pretty exhausitve lists here. I just have to say that :D Masking Tape :D is a must! "Tape Day" was a HUGE hit here!!! :D I think the only thing that I didn't have was BLACK paint that you'll need in the 1st unit. I did absolutely NO looking ahead & preparing & thought it was super-easy to use any one of the suggestions listed (or something close). I LOVE how open-and-go HOD is for me!!! :D

Have fun!!!
