Rod and Staff?

Post by momof4girls » Wed May 12, 2010 8:30 pm

Me again!! Okay, I just put this together that the language/writing in HOD is R & S (in catalog I didn't see it called that)! Another light bulb moment! yeah! Can you tell I'm a newbie?? So, I guess my ? is when using R & S for CTC and Bigger is spelling included with what I would be ordering for these guides?? I went to the R & S website and saw that there are packages for R & S that includes spelling and maybe vocabulary?? Do I need to worry about these items too? Or is the spelling in the TM for each guide I guess is it woven in already??? Oh Boy, I hope I'm making sense! Also, if anyone has any suggestions as to which level of R & S to use with DD 11! I think she's pretty strong with her basic skills of grammer, but would probably not hurt to have some additional review! Thanks again!

Spelling is in your HOD program. There are instructions and spelling lists or dictation exercises in the appendix.

You are correct; you don't need spelling & vocab, as this is covered in the TM. Regarding R & S...check out the samples at the Rod and Staff website to get an idea. If she had in-depth grammar previously, then she is probably ready for R&S 5. Otherwise start at R&S 4. R&S 5 is pretty intense..and many people spread it out over two years...I believe this is Carrie's recommendation, as well.

Ditto to what's been said - spelling is covered through lists early on and dictation after that. No need for doubling up by adding another spelling program to the mix. R & S English 2 is scheduled daily in Bigger Hearts. Both R & S English 4 and 5 are scheduled half-speed in CTC's guide. You just choose one of those levels. We enjoyed this pacing, as 2 days were spent on R & S English, and 2 days were spent on "Write with the Best" which is the creative writing instruction. Of course if another R & S English level is needed or you want to go full-speed, that is easy to do as well. HTH! :D
