Choosing Genres
Choosing Genres
What do you ladies think is best when choosing a genre for DITHOR? Do you pick the same one that you're reading aloud or go with something totally different? I can see the wisdom in both decisions. Another option would be to let my ds choose which book he wants to do first? Does anyone have a formula? I'm sure I'm overthinking it, but wanted to know what you veterans do.

Re: Choosing Genres
I started DITHOR a few weeks ago and I choose the first genre: Biography. I will have my son pick the next one and see how that goes.... I thought it might be confusing to be in the same genre with story time and with DITHOR, but he did well. We are ready to move to the adventure book for Storytime and I will see what genre he picks...It may be out of a straw hat
We do both story time and DITHOR 3x a week. I am so off on the schedule and I have learned to put sticky notes in my manual so I know on what unit I am for what subject. I hope to eventually catch up when I go full time after the summer.
I love doing the character studies in both and I think it will work fine either way you choose. If you do the different genres the same character trait will be studied at a different time. Your child may be at a different place and need it again than
Success with whatever you end up doing.
EDIT: I decided to pick the next genre since I have 'Pioneer Cat' and 'Hannah', by just looking at them they look girly for historical fiction and he might not pick them as he is getting a bit older!!! A boy thing
So as for now he will get to pick the next genre

Re: Choosing Genres
Hi there - this so fun putting your face to your name in my mind, as I had such a nice time meeting you at the book fair! I have done it both ways - same genre as Storytime, and not the same genre as Storytime. We liked the variety of doing different genres better, but that could just be us. Oftentimes, I end up choosing the genre based on the books I can find. Now that we made a home library system, I'm doing better, but oh my! Before that, I was heading on a book hunt that was never ending. Have fun experimenting with what you'd like best for DITHOR!

Re: Choosing Genres
We ended up with it both ways last year, too. And like Julie, we preferred to have them be different. It still works either way...but it kind of felt like overkill on the character quality focus for the genre if we were talking about it at least 7 times during the month with the same verses & definitions. They're great, but it seemed to me that they sunk in better if we talked about them and then revisited on a different month.

Re: Choosing Genres
Thanks so much, ladies for the replies. I think I will do different genres. I think it will probably keep things a little less predictable (can't think of a better word right there ) Plus, I know we'll definitely need refreshing on the character thing.
Julie, I was so glad to get to meet you and Carrie in person. You both just have such sweet spirits. I'm sure your parents are just so very proud of you both.
