Quick question about Singapore levels

Post by mariaw » Fri Apr 09, 2010 4:39 pm

OK, first let me say that I realize that with homeschoolers, grade levels can be flexible. However, I want to also make sure that I'm on track and don't end up in high school with not enough time to get through the higher level math that we want to get through.

So, my question is, my dd9 is in 3rd grade. She is currently about to start Singapore 2B. Much of it (like the money section) will be review...we mostly went back to catch up on multiplication and division, which Singapore starts earlier than our old program. Should I rush her through and only skim over the things she already knows to try to get her more caught up with her grade level? It seems to me that I remember hearing somewhere that Singapore can be done 1 grade behind, and it's ok.

I'm normally not so caught up in "grade levels" but it's something that's been bugging me and I just had to ask.

you're right! You can use Singapore a level behind your grade. Many moms put kids in pre-alg after Singapore 5 or 6.
And if you are new to Singapore, I'd make sure to present the singapore method of doing things for all topics, even if it's a review, just to cover all your bases. But you'll likely be able to go more quickly through those.

(as a sidenote, i'm typing one handed, holding my 4month old, so don't mind the poor typing and lack of capitals  )

Yes, that's just fine! :D Singapore is typically considered a year advanced. I think it's important to start where a child places (the Singapore math placement test is quite accurate for that). If a child's placement was much further behind their age level, I'd do it through the summers - slow and steady wins the race - for anyone else reading this wondering this same thing.
