Canadian Question

Post by eachlee » Sat Apr 03, 2010 8:23 am

Hi,
I've been searching the forum for Canadian users of HOD, and have enjoyed reading what people have said. I'm wondering if someone can say that they've successfully used HOD through each year, or if you had to take a year off because of the American history focus? I'd just really like to hear from someone who can say that they've done it, as substituting books seems like a huge task to me, and I'm not sure how well I could do it... I think I could add some Canadian history on top of the stuff already covered, but I wonder if that would be too much for my kids.

I realize I'm still a ways away from having to seriously think about this, but it's something that I've been thinking about lately. I was so certain that HOD was the way to go, now I'm having doubts. I'd like to have a real peace about the curriculum that I choose, and thought that I had that with this but now I can't stop thinking about American and Canadian history....

Thanks so much for your help! :D

Well, I'm not Canadian, so I can't really answer your question, but I did want to tell you that the two guides that cover American History (so far) are Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory and Bigger Hearts for His Glory...here are links to those two packages.

http://heartofdakota.com/bigger-hearts-packages.php

That way, you can see all the books that are included and will know what would be covered in each.

I don't think I would add anything to the guide....if you wanted to just go through a guide and cover Canadian history, you could alternate. Maybe go more slowly through an HOD guide, and on the day you don't use the history portion for HOD use a Canadian resource. Just a suggestion....I'm sure others will come along and have other advise for you. And hopefully a Canadian user will be able to answer your specific question.

Hi,

Just wanted to chime in and say I'm a "Canadian user" to. Doesn't that sound illegal? :D

This has been our first year with HOD and we found it because we wanted to do an Am. History Year. We've been doing Bigger and Beyond. We have really enjoyed having the manual for the open and go format and liked the materials and choices. I'd like to stick with HOD so I'm trying to figure how to incorporate Canadian History as well. Last year we did a Canadian History year but it was tough. I pulled together my own resources but found I ran out of steam in some ways. My two olders have taken basic Canadian history now so I don't have a problem with them doing Preparing and up and hopefully we can add some Canadian history in Year 2 or 3 of the cycle. Or else, we'll just take some time off from HOD and do a unit study on Canada or something. For my youngers, I'm not sure where I will fit that in. Some have suggested doing it alongside American History but I'm not sure how confusing that would be for younger ones? I do plan on using My First History of Canada by Donalda Dickie because I feel it is a book that's very Charlotte Masonish and HOD friendly. There are several good historical fiction novels in Candian history but definately they are not as plentiful as as the AM. history ones! This probably didn't help much but I wanted you to know you are not alone! By the way, where do you live? I'm in Alberta.

Thank you both for your answers. It does help to know that I'm not the only "Canadian user". (I think that's just great!) We're also in Alberta, in a small town near Edmonton.

Another Canadian user here ... :D

Have you checked out this Canadian homeschooler's forum http://cpeicheff.proboards.com/index.cgi? I have begun "digging" on this site and elsewhere for great Canadian History suggestions too.

We love HOD and plan to continue with all the guides. This year we have read some great Canadian picture books from our library as "extra reading". We plan to do the same next year.
