Science Experiments...

Post by shaffer96 » Sat Mar 20, 2010 9:13 pm

What are some examples of science experiments from LHFHG? I saw the one on the sample page, but I just wondered what other kinds of science experiments were in LHFHG. If anyone who has does the program would like to comment on it I would appreciate it! Thanks!

There are lots of fun activities for LHFHG science! There are two days for science in each unit and they tie in with the history for that day, too. Here are some examples that my children enjoyed when we went through LHFHG:

Unit 2, Day 4 - History is about Noah and the flood. For science you read about some of the big animals that were on the ark, and make a boat out of foil. Test the boats in a tub of water to make sure they will float, then add small weights (pennies, paper clips, etc.) to see how much weight the boat can hold without sinking.

Unit 4, Day 5 - History is about the plagues on the Egyptians. In science you read about bugs and frogs, and talk about living vs. nonliving things. You call out the different plagues and the student should freeze like a statue if it is nonliving. If the plague was a living thing, the student should do an action for it.

Unit 6, Day 1 - History is about Moses sending the spies into Canaan. In science you read about dry land and soil, then make an edible soil model to illustrate the different levels of soil, using things like raisins, chocolate chips, graham cracker crumbs, cereal flakes. Then they get to eat the "soil" - my kids loved this!

Unit 21, Day 2 - History is about Christopher Columbus and how he wanted to prove that the earth was round. In science you read about the seas/oceans and color a picture of the earth. Then you will "sail" a cotton ball across a flat table and then slide it around the surface of a ball.

There are fun activities for the senses of smell and taste, the process of digestion, the life cycle of a butterfly, light, plants, water, land formations, and so, so many more!

Heidi already did an awesome job of sharing some of science experiments - that was so nice of you, Heidi! :D I'll just chime in that the way science is done in LHFHG fostered the love of it at an early age for my dc. My oldest is in CTC, and my middle ds in BHFHG, and they are still loving science. :D
