Ok admit it you can't say it either!

Post by water2wine » Mon Mar 15, 2010 10:44 am

I have the hardest time trying to say all the weird names we come upon in our studies. Here are a couple of sites help if you are pronunciation deficient as well. This one is good for names you come across in history readings. http://www.howjsay.com This one is good for biblical names. http://netministries.org/Bbasics/bwords.htm

I know you all can say all the names perfectly but my family is very challenged in this area  so if you know of any other good sites please share! :D

Thanks, water2wine, I will have to check these sites out! I have a hard time pronouncing names as well. I usually just "wing" it and keep going, but I have been thinking more about this especially now that my ds is beginning to read. I want to make sure that I am helping him to pronounce names correctly! :)

Thanks for sharing! 8)

I used to do that as well but the other day I was busted at church when my kids said a name wrong and then blamed it on me, hahahaha! I did teach it to them the way they said it.

You mean I'm not the only one?!

I definitely need this resource, thank you!

I just recently learned, from a friend, that "Babel" is NOT pronounced buh-bell.
And that "Pilate" is NOT pronounced pill-ah-tay, like the exercise.

I'm just glad my friend and my husband had enough nerve to correct me so I wouldn't go through life saying the names wrong!

Candice - you really crack me up!  Thankfully I had heard of Pilate way before I heard of Pilates. (I had the opposite problem, though! )

I bookmarked your websites, w2w. The thing about mispronouncing something is that you don't really know if you are sometimes. Unless your kids show off at an opportune time... I have been very thankful for the little pronunciation guides at the bottom of the page in CHOW! They've helped me most of the time I've questioned something this year in Preparing.

Candice - I needed a laugh - thanks!

w2w - you are so right! I know I'm saying things wrong sometimes (probably even more than I realize  ), so thanks for this thread! :D

On a sidenote, this is why it's important to have our dc orally read their DITHOR books to us, even when they're older, and even if it's just a page now and then. Have I ever told you about Wyatt saying "Penny-lope" for "Penelope"? (I caught this in the MIDDLE of the book, so you can imagine how difficult it was for Penny-lope to be transformed into Penelope when he read. ) Or, Carrie's ds when he was younger narrating about "Elsie" from the Bible (Elisha)? :D Then there was Wyatt's "Mount A-ra-fa-fat" - this list could go on. Anyway, it's good to take a listen now and then as our dc seem to have inherited our not being able to say things too. :D

Julie,

Great point about the DITHOR books being read orally to us (even when they are older) by our kiddos. I will keep this info at the ready even though DITHOR is a bit far off for us. Thank you for sharing your experience.

And WTW, thanks again for the resource, I imagine that I will be using it for a long time to come! :D
