grammar choice

Post by Susan » Mon Mar 03, 2008 2:30 pm

I will be using Bigger next year. My daughter will be in 4th grade next year. She's struggled in reading but is gaining ground. Will the 2nd grade grammar be okay for her in 4th grade? Should I go up a grade even though the 2nd grade schedule is in Bigger?

Thanks for the input,
Susan

Susan,

I'm going to move your post over to the main board, as this folder is for experience type testomonials about "Bigger...". The main board is where all new posts go, so you'll get many more repsonses over there.

As to your question, it would depend on how much formal grammar instruction your little honey has had as to whether Rod and Staff 2 or 3 would be the best choice for you to use with "Bigger..". :D

So, if you get a chance to pop back in and let us know a little more, it'll help us give you better advice.

Blessings,
Carrie

Hi Susan! We're doing Bigger... now, and I think you will enjoy it so much! As far as the grammar, I'd say it depends on whether your dd has done grammar before and if so, to what level. I will say we really like R & S Level 2, which is what is planned out in Bigger... R & S Level 3 would be another option, if she has had grammar already. I don't think Level 4 would be a good idea - it is a BIG jump! What do you think?

I'm going to attempt to post a link for ya! There are samples here of the grammar books. sometimes looking at the samples helps with placement.

My kids are all exactly one year below grade level in R&S. They all were pulled out of ps and it took some work to get them even to that point in R&S. I found looking at the samples really helped in placing them.

I recently looked at BJU 8th grade grammar and found my dd in R&S 4th grade was doing equivalent work. R&S really ramps up after 2nd grade.

My current 3rd and 4th graders are using R and S Grade 2 with Bigger, because neither of them had any formal grammar prior, and because my 4th grader was struggling in reading, and my 3rd grader was struggling in writing. We are at the halfway mark now, and it was a good choice for us- they are both making gains in their weaker areas.

As a supplement:

Since you said that your dd has struggled with reading....I wanted to mention that Time4Learning has been a wonderful supplement in helping my dd to read.
