Teaching Elements of Music

Post by happy@home » Sun Mar 07, 2010 2:41 pm

What do you ladies use to teach children the basic elements of music? We listen to Christian music and we love the Steve Green cd that goes with LHFHG! But I was considering "teaching" some basic stuff like rhythm and tempo and maybe even music notes and such. Any ideas?

Thanks!

No particular instrument, just music in general. Does that make any sense?

I found a used copy of Calvert's Melody Lane VHS series that covers those topics for K-2, and my kids really like it. It's got an instructor's guide with ways to extend the lessons. It's been repackaged as Discoveries in Music on DVD (for quite a price, IMO) on their website. I'm interested in other ideas as well...hopefully others will chime in :D

Oh I'd love to respond! :)
Piano teacher here, so my answers will focus on keyboard...
Check out www.musiclearningcommunity.com for a small fee, you can play over one hundred quality theory games. It will also keep a score report for you.
There is also software that is fun called the Groovy Series. Check out http://www.keystoimagination.com for some really great ideas, software, CD's, and DVD's for kids to learn about music. The teacher who runs it, Michelle Sisler, is VERY helpful!
